Xiaomi has officially announced its software update policy for the coming years, bringing unfavorable news for owners of eight of its most affordable smartphones. The company confirmed that these devices will not be eligible to receive future major updates to the operating system, Android 16, and its custom interface, HyperOS 3.

The decision directly affects a range of devices from the Redmi and POCO lines, which will end their system update cycle with Android 15 and an intermediate version of HyperOS. Segundo the Chinese manufacturer, the measure is aligned with the life cycle of the devices’ hardware, which may not optimally support the most advanced features of new software versions.

This support strategy has direct implications for the longevity and user experience of devices, raising debates about the sustainability and long-term value of entry-level and mid-range smartphones. Para users, the news demands attention about the future of their devices, especially in relation to new features and security.

Details of the new Xiaomi update policy

The new Xiaomi guideline establishes a ceiling for software advancement in certain models, which were launched between 2023 and the beginning of 2024. The company clarified that support for these devices will end in version HyperOS 2.2, which is based on Android 15. From that point on, they will no longer receive new versions of the Android operating system and the HyperOS interface.

This decision is mainly driven by hardware limitations. New software versions, such as Android 16 and HyperOS 3, tend to require more processing power, memory and graphics capabilities that the entry-level chipsets of these models may not offer as smoothly as desired. Manter stable user experience is one of the company’s central arguments to justify ending the cycle of major updates.

It is important to highlight that the end of system updates does not mean the immediate end of security support. Xiaomi has committed to continuing to provide periodic security patches for these devices for a specified period of time, ensuring protection against critical vulnerabilities. The timing of these patches, however, varies by model and region.

The company’s official communication aims to bring clarity to consumers, allowing future buyers to make more informed decisions and current owners to understand the life cycle of their products. The list of devices was released to avoid speculation and confirm which devices will be impacted by the measure.

Models that will not receive Android 16 and HyperOS 3

The list released by Xiaomi includes popular devices from its sub-brands, Redmi and POCO, known for their good value for money. Entre The confirmed models that will not receive the Android 16 and HyperOS 3 are the Redmi 13C and its equivalent, the POCO C65. Ambos devices share similar specifications and are aimed at the entry-level segment, offering basic features at a competitive price. The Redmi 12, another bestseller, is also included in the list, ending its cycle of major updates soon.

Other notable devices on the list are the Redmi Note 12 (4G version), Redmi Note 12S, Redmi Note 13 4G and their variants with NFC. Esses smartphones represent a significant share of the mid-range market, where Xiaomi has consolidated its presence globally. The inclusion of these models in the end of system support list could impact a large number of users who sought a balance between price and performance in these devices, and are now faced with a shorter software life cycle than expected.

What the end of support means in practice

For the common user, the end of the cycle of major software updates has practical and long-term consequences. The main one is the functional stagnation of the device. Owners of affected models will not have access to the new functionality, interface improvements, performance optimizations, and new artificial intelligence features that will be introduced with Android 16 and HyperOS 3. Isso includes, for example, advances in customization, battery management, and integration with other devices in the Xiaomi ecosystem. Over time, this lag can lead to incompatibility with new applications or updated versions of popular apps that require newer operating system APIs. Além Additionally, the usage experience may seem dated compared to newer devices. Embora security support continues for a period, which according to the company could extend until January 2028 for some models such as the

HyperOS 3 features that will be left out

HyperOS 3, which will succeed the current version of the Xiaomi system, promises to bring a series of innovations focused on artificial intelligence and ecosystem integration. One of the main new features expected is the evolution of “Super Xiao AI”, the brand’s AI assistant, which should gain more advanced context understanding and task automation capabilities.

Devices that will not receive the update will also miss out on significant performance and energy efficiency improvements. HyperOS 3 is being developed to optimize communication between hardware and software, resulting in smoother animations, faster response times and smarter memory management, which directly impacts battery longevity.

Another set of features that will be inaccessible are improvements to the interconnectivity of “Human x Car x Home”. Xiaomi is investing heavily to create a unified experience across smartphones, electric vehicles and smart home devices. HyperOS 3 will be the centerpiece of this strategy, and older models will not be able to fully benefit from this seamless integration.

Security Implications for Owners

The main concern users have when a device stops receiving system updates is security. However, it is crucial to differentiate Android version updates from security updates. Xiaomi, following the policy of Google, will continue to provide security patches for the listed models for an additional period after the end of system updates.

These patches fix critical vulnerabilities that can be exploited by malware or hackers. The release schedule varies, but these are generally quarterly packages that keep your device protected against the latest threats. Redmi 12, for example, has security patches guaranteed until June 2027, offering a layer of protection for a long time.

Xiaomi’s strategy compared to the competition

Xiaomi’s software update policy, especially for its entry-level and mid-range devices, contrasts with that of other giants in the market. Samsung, for example, has become a leader in the Android ecosystem by promising up to seven years of system and security updates for its major releases in the Galaxy line, a policy that significantly raises the industry standard.

On the other hand, Apple maintains a historical advantage, offering around six to seven years of iOS updates for its iPhones, ensuring longevity and resale value. Xiaomi’s strategy appears more focused on keeping costs low on its high-volume models, which implies a shorter software support cycle, encouraging users to update their devices more frequently.

The future of the HyperOS ecosystem

Despite leaving some models behind, Xiaomi continues to invest heavily in the development of HyperOS as a unified platform. The brand’s future launches, especially the premium main and intermediate lines, such as the expected Redmi Note 14, will already hit the market with the latest versions of the system, guaranteeing access to the full potential of the ecosystem and a longer support cycle.
