General Motors (GM) has set a new direction for one of its flagship SUVs, the Buick Envision. The company confirmed that the next generation of the vehicle, scheduled for 2028, will have its production transferred from the China to the Estados Unidos. The strategic decision mainly aims to circumvent the high import tariffs applied to vehicles manufactured in Chinese territory and optimize the automaker’s production logistics in América of Norte.

The unit chosen to house the new assembly line is the Fairfax factory, located in Kansas City, in the state of Kansas. Atualmente, Envision is imported from a plant operated in partnership with SAIC-GM at China, which subjects it to a 25% tax rate. The change represents a significant realignment in the operations of Buick, which seeks to strengthen its presence and competitiveness in the American market.

GM assured that the transition will not cause interruptions in the model’s supply. The current Buick Envision will continue to be imported as normal over the next few years, ensuring the SUV’s availability in dealerships until production on the Fairfax is fully operational. The new generation will also adopt a new platform, the D2, the same one used by the Chevrolet Equinox, unifying the production base of its compact SUVs and generating economies of scale.

Details of the transition to the Fairfax factory

The General Motors factory in Fairfax will undergo a process of modernization and adaptation to receive the production of the new Buick Envision. The unit, which is currently responsible for assembling the Chevrolet Malibu, will have its production line reconfigured, as the sedan will be discontinued. Essa change will free up the industrial capacity necessary to accommodate not only the Envision, but also the gasoline version of the Chevrolet Equinox, consolidating the plant as a strategic hub for the company’s SUVs.

The schedule established by the automaker calls for adaptations at the factory to begin in mid-2027, with volume production of the new Envision scheduled to begin in 2028. The investment in the Fairfax plant reinforces GM’s commitment to local manufacturing and aims to optimize operating costs, eliminating expenses related to import tariffs and complex trans-Pacific transportation logistics. Side-by-side production with the Equinox will allow for more efficient sharing of components and processes, increasing the profit margin of both vehicles.

The strategy behind the platform change

The decision to migrate the Buick Envision from the E2 platform to the D2 is a purely economic and strategic move. The E2 architecture, used in the current generation SUV, was originally developed to support a wider range of vehicles, including models such as the Cadillac XT4, the Chevrolet Malibu and the Buick Regal. However, with the progressive discontinuation of these cars, maintaining a sophisticated and high-cost platform for a single model became financially unviable. The lack of scale compromised the profitability of the Envision, putting pressure on GM to seek a more efficient solution. The adoption of the D2 platform, already consolidated by the success of the Chevrolet Equinox, solves this problem by creating a direct synergy between the two SUVs. Embora share the same structural base, the General Motors guarantees that the Envision will maintain its premium positioning. Differentiation will be ensured through an exclusive design, superior quality interior finishes, more advanced on-board technologies and a suspension setting focused on comfort, justifying its higher price range in relation to its “cousin” the Chevrolet.

What to expect from the new generation of Envision

The future generation of the Buick Envision must inherit and improve the characteristics that have consolidated it in the market. The expectation is that the model will maintain the four-cylinder turbo engine, possibly an evolution of the current 2.0-liter engine, which delivers 228 horsepower and 35.7 kgfm of torque. The nine-speed automatic transmission, known for its smoothness, is also expected to continue, as are front- or all-wheel drive (AWD) options.

Inside, the SUV tends to incorporate technologies already seen in the 2026 line, such as the impressive 30-inch ultrawide screen that integrates the instrument panel and the multimedia center. Recursos semi-autonomous driving system, such as the Super Cruise system, and luxury finishing packages, such as the Avenir version, will continue to be the model’s differentiators to attract a more demanding public.

End of imports and the weight of tariffs

The manufacture of the Buick Envision on the China has always been a sensitive point for its operation on the Estados Unidos. Desde its introduction into the American market, the SUV is affected by a 25% import tariff, a commercial barrier that considerably increases its final cost and compresses General Motors’s profit margins.

By nationalizing production, the Envision gets rid of this taxation, gaining momentum to compete more aggressively in the competitive medium SUV segment. The change will put it on an equal footing with strong rivals such as the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Tucson, which already have consolidated production in the América of the Norte.

This strategy also strengthens Buick’s image as an American brand, aligning it with a growing sense of appreciation for local production on the part of consumers and the government. The decision is a direct response to the current geopolitical and commercial scenario.

Synergies with Chevrolet Equinox

Despite sharing the same D2 platform, Buick Envision and Chevrolet Equinox were designed to serve different audiences within the vast General Motors portfolio. The Equinox is positioned as a high-volume vehicle, focused on practicality, durability and cost-benefit for families, being one of the best-selling models of the Chevrolet.

On the other hand, the Envision occupies a superior niche, aimed at consumers looking for more refinement, comfort and technology. The differentiation between the two is evident in the exterior design, the choice of materials for the interior finish and the list of standard and optional equipment.

Unifying architecture is a smart industrial strategy, as it allows GM to save billions on development and large-scale component purchasing. Essa economies of scale make it possible to offer a more sophisticated product like the Envision at a competitive price.

The external dimensions of the two vehicles are very close, which greatly simplifies the adaptation of the assembly line in Fairfax to produce both models simultaneously. GM takes advantage of existing synergies in engines, transmissions and electronic systems to maximize manufacturing efficiency.

Envision’s trajectory in the North American market

The Buick Envision has a history of success in the Estados Unidos, consolidating itself as the brand’s second best-selling vehicle in the country, behind only the Encore GX. Lançado originally in 2016, the SUV quickly found its space, and the second generation, introduced in 2021, further improved its design and technology attributes, maintaining good sales performance, which is around 40 to 50 thousand units annually.

Future of the Buick brand in the Estados Unidos

The decision to produce the Envision locally is in line with Buick’s strategy of focusing its offering on SUVs and crossovers, a segment that continues to grow in preference among American consumers. The brand’s current line is made up of models such as the Envista, Encore GX, Envision and the Enclave, completely abandoning sedans in the local market.

With the nationalization of Envision, Buick will significantly increase the proportion of its vehicles manufactured in Estados Unidos, which reinforces its identity and meets the expectations of part of its audience. The measure solidifies the importance of the North American market for the brand’s future, even with its strong presence in China.
