Tesla announced the end of production of models S and X in the second quarter of 2026. The decision was revealed by CEO The space occupied by the assembly lines for these vehicles at the Fremont factory, at Califórnia, will be converted to the manufacture of the Optimus humanoid robot. Essa change reflects the company’s strategy of prioritizing autonomy and robotics technologies. The S and X models, launched respectively in 2012 and 2015, represent less than 3% of total Tesla deliveries last year. The company will maintain its main focus on the Model 3 and Model Y, which dominate sales. Musk highlighted that the transition allows us to move towards a future based on autonomous vehicles and intelligent robots. Production of the current flagships will be completed gradually by the end of the indicated period.

Consumers interested in the Model S and X should place orders soon. The company does not plan direct replacements for these models in the near term.

  • Main reasons for the decision:
    • Relocation of production space in Fremont.
    • Acceleration of production of Optimus.
    • Low sales volume of premium models.
    • Emphasis on vehicle autonomy.

Decision announced at results conference

Elon Musk detailed the change during Tesla’s earnings call. Ele described the end of the Model S and X programs as a necessary transition for the company’s future. Production will be halted in the second quarter of 2026, allowing for the installation of new lines dedicated to the Optimus.

The Fremont factory will gain the capacity to produce up to 1 million units of the robot per year. Essa target represents a significant increase in Tesla’s ambitions in robotics. The company plans to launch the third generation of the Optimus in the first quarter of 2026, with a design optimized for mass production.

Musk emphasized that the decision aligns the industrial structure with long-term goals. Tesla will invest more than $20 billion in capital expenditures during 2026. Parte of these resources will be directed toward expanding lines for robots and autonomous vehicles.

History of models S and X at Tesla

The Model S arrived on the market in 2012 as the brand’s first premium electric sedan. Ele has set performance and range standards for electric vehicles around the world. The model received constant updates, including the Plaid version with superior acceleration.

The Model X, launched in 2015, introduced falcon wing doors and configuration for up to seven passengers. Ambos vehicles have helped position Tesla as a leader in electrical innovation. Eles helped demonstrate commercial viability of long-lasting batteries and powerful motors.

Sales of both models remained stable in the first few years. However, the explosive growth of Model 3 and Model Y reduced their relative share. More affordable vehicles accounted for about 97% of the company’s recent global deliveries.

Current versions offer ranges of over 600 kilometers in top-of-the-line configurations. Elas include advanced driver assistance and onboard entertainment features.

Transformation of the Fremont factory

The Fremont unit, in Califórnia, houses the main production of Tesla in Estados Unidos. Ela will be reconfigured to accommodate the new lines of Optimus. The conversion will begin after the Model S and X assemblies are phased out.

The projected capacity of 1 million robots per year requires investments in automation and supplies. Tesla develops the Optimus as a versatile assistant for industrial and domestic tasks. The third generation of the robot will receive improvements in mobility and artificial intelligence.

The factory will continue to produce other vehicles in separate areas. The move does not affect the overall assembly operations of Model 3 and Model Y. The relocation optimizes the use of available space at the company’s historic location.

Strategy to focus on robotics and autonomy

Tesla directs increasing resources to the development of Optimus. The humanoid robot demonstrates precise movements and object manipulation. The company foresees applications in production lines and various services.

At the same time, the Cybercab project is advancing, an autonomous vehicle without a steering wheel or pedals. Production of this model is expected to begin in volume during 2026. The company is preparing additional facilities to meet projected demand.

Investments in AI chips and infrastructure support both projects. Tesla seeks independence in critical components for robotics and autonomous driving. Essa approach integrates internally developed hardware and software.

Transition operational details

The interruption of production will occur on a scheduled basis throughout the second quarter. Existing stocks will meet final orders for Model S and X. Tesla advises customers to finalize purchases in the coming months.

The Optimus line at Fremont will complement planned units at other factories. The company maintains ambitious scaling goals for the humanoid robot. Testes internals validate constant progress on the project.

The transition reflects an adjustment in the total industrial capacity of Tesla. Ela prioritizes segments with the highest growth projected for the coming years.

Reduced lineup perspective

With the end of Model S and X, Tesla will essentially offer Model 3, Model Y and derivatives. The Cybertruck and Semi complete the range in smaller volumes. Essa concentration simplifies operations and reduces fixed costs.

The remaining models serve the majority of the brand’s current consumers. Eles have more affordable prices and greater production volume. The strategy maintains competitiveness in the expanding electric market.

The company is preparing additional releases based on new platforms. Elas incorporate advances in batteries and energy efficiency.
