Dacia, a brand from the Renault group, redefines standards for compact SUVs by presenting the new Duster with unprecedented engineering on the market. The model stands out for a triple combination of technologies: 48-volt mild-hybrid engine, dual-fuel power supply with gasoline and Gás Liquefeito of Petróleo (LPG), and an innovative 4×4 traction system that uses an electric motor dedicated to the rear axle.
This pioneering configuration results in one of the vehicle’s greatest attractions: a combined range that can reach up to 1,500 kilometers with both fuel tanks full. Este number not only positions the Duster as a benchmark for efficiency, but also directly addresses drivers’ concerns about the need for frequent refueling on long journeys.
The heart of the system is a 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo engine that delivers 140 horsepower, managed by a six-speed dual-clutch automated transmission. The set is reinforced by a 31 horsepower electric motor positioned at the rear, ensuring full traction on demand and agility in different terrain conditions.
The mechanics behind triple efficiency
The propulsion system of the new Dacia Duster has been meticulously designed to offer an ideal balance between performance, economy and sustainability. At the heart of the operation is the 1.2 turbo gasoline engine, which works in conjunction with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. Esse electrical auxiliary system not only improves efficiency, but also smoothes engine operation by switching it off during short stops, such as at traffic lights, and providing an extra boost during acceleration. Energy for this system is recovered during braking and deceleration and stored in a small 48-volt battery. The big innovation, however, is the integration of dual-fuel power (LPG), which allows the driver to switch between gasoline and gas transparently. Advanced electronic vehicle management automatically adjusts engine parameters to ensure performance remains consistent regardless of the fuel used, allowing the driver to opt for the most economical or currently available alternative, significantly optimizing long-term operating costs.
Intelligent traction with rear electric motor
The all-wheel drive system of the Duster Hybrid-G 150 4×4 represents a technological advance by abandoning traditional mechanical components, such as the cardan shaft. In normal driving conditions, such as on paved roads and at cruising speeds, the SUV operates in exclusively front-wheel drive to maximize fuel economy.
However, a network of sensors continuously monitors wheel grip. At the first sign of loss of traction or slippage on the front axle, the 31 horsepower electric motor on the rear axle is activated instantly, in a matter of milliseconds, converting the vehicle into a 4×4 smoothly and imperceptibly for the driver.
This architecture not only ensures safety on slippery floors, but also optimizes efficiency in urban environments. At low speeds and rotations, the system can operate in 100% electric mode using only the rear engine for up to 60% of the time, drastically reducing fuel consumption and noise emissions in urban traffic.
Maintained performance on challenging terrain
Despite the complexity added by the hybrid system, the LPG tank and the rear electric motor, the Dacia Duster maintains its reputation for robustness and off-road capability intact. The project was carefully executed so as not to compromise the vehicle’s essential features, such as the generous ground clearance and excellent entry and exit angles, which are crucial for overcoming obstacles on rough terrain.
The introduction of the electric motor on the rear axle actually improves off-road performance. The main advantage is the delivery of instantaneous torque, a characteristic of electric motors that surpasses the response of many mechanical traction systems. Essa ability to apply immediate force to the rear wheels provides much more precise control on low-grip surfaces, such as mud, sand or gravel, making driving in adverse situations safer and giving the driver greater confidence when exploring difficult trails and paths.
Driving modes for every need
To maximize the versatility of the mechanical package, the new Duster is equipped with a driving mode selector, allowing the driver to adapt the vehicle’s behavior to different conditions of use and terrain.
Auto mode is the default setting for daily use, autonomously managing the distribution of torque between the axles and the use of combustion and electric engines to optimize the relationship between performance and efficiency.
The Eco mode adjusts the throttle response and hybrid system management to prioritize maximum fuel economy, ideal for long road trips or for those looking to reduce fueling costs.
For more specific situations, the Neve and Lama/Sand modes reconfigure the traction and stability control parameters, adjusting power delivery to maximize grip on low-friction surfaces and prevent the vehicle from bogging down.
Consumption and autonomy that redefine the segment
The consumption data approved by the WLTP cycle confirms the high efficiency proposal of the Dacia Duster Hybrid-G 150 4×4. When using gasoline, the SUV has an average consumption that varies between 5.5 and 5.6 liters per 100 kilometers.
When fueled with LPG, consumption increases slightly, remaining between 7.1 and 7.2 liters per 100 km, a variation justified by the lower energy density of the gas. The key to the extended autonomy lies in the combination of two tanks of 50 liters each, allowing the vehicle to travel up to 1,500 kilometers without having to stop to refuel.
Technological and connected interior
The interior of the new Duster has been updated to offer more comfort and technology, with more robust finishing materials and a design focused on functionality. The central dashboard is dominated by a new touch-sensitive multimedia center screen, which offers full connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The instrument panel has also been modernized, adopting a digital display that provides detailed information about the functioning of the hybrid system. The driver can monitor the energy flow between the combustion engine, the electric motor and the battery in real time, in addition to viewing the charge level and the active traction mode.
Prices and versions on the European market
In the European market, the Dacia Duster Hybrid-G 150 4×4 is now available with a starting price of 28,500 euros for the entry-level version Expression. The most equipped versions, such as the Extreme and Journey, which add items such as a 360-degree camera, parking sensors and lane keeping assistant, have prices that reach approximately 30 thousand euros, consolidating the model as an excellent value for money option in the segment.
