The season opener of Nascar Cup Series was impacted by adverse weather conditions, leading to the postponement of Cook Out Clash. The exhibition race, scheduled for the historic Bowman Gray Stadium, in Winston-Salem, Carolina from Norte, was rescheduled for Monday night, due to a winter storm that brought snow and low temperatures to the region, making it impossible to hold the activities over the weekend.

With the change, 38 drivers and their teams are now preparing for a condensed schedule that will concentrate all the action on a single day. The event, which does not count towards the championship, serves as a competitive preview before the official start of the season, testing the teams’ new cars and strategies on one of the most challenging circuits on the calendar.

The main race broadcast will be maintained by FOX, with additional coverage on MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Radio. The decision to postpone the event was made by the Nascar organization, prioritizing the safety of competitors, teams and the public present at the stadium.

Competition format is changed due to bad weather

With the cancellation of all track activities over the weekend, Nascar has implemented a revised, direct competition format for Cook Out Clash. Traditional qualifying races have been eliminated, and the starting grid for the main event will be defined by a single qualifying session. The 20 fastest drivers in this session will guarantee their places directly in the main race, which will have 200 laps. The dynamics of a short, flat circuit of just a quarter of a mile require specific adjustments to the cars, with a focus on acceleration and control in tight corners, making qualifying even more crucial. The teams received five sets of tires for dry tracks and four for wet tracks, a precautionary measure given the recent unstable weather conditions.

For drivers who do not qualify in the top 20, there will be one last opportunity in the repechage race, known as Last Chance Qualifier. Esta 75-lap race will grant the first two places the remaining places on the grid. The 23rd and final position will be filled by the best-placed driver in the 2025 championship who was unable to qualify using previous methods, a rule that guarantees the presence of established names in the event. Essa structure intensifies competitiveness from the opening moments, as each lap on the track becomes decisive to secure a place in the race that unofficially opens the calendar.

Main names from Cup Series confirmed in the dispute

The entry list brings together the elite of Nascar, with champions and young talents divided between the most traditional teams in the category. Kyle Larson, 2021 champion, returns to command Chevrolet number 5 of Hendrick Motorsports, being one of the favorites for the season title. At its side, the team has other strong competitors, such as Chase Elliott, one of the most popular drivers among fans and who is looking for a recovery season.

Team Penske, one of the powerhouses of the sport, arrives with its trio of Fords, including the current champion Ryan Blaney, in car number 12, as well as the experienced Joey Logano. Pela Joe Gibbs Racing, the veteran Denny Hamlin, specialist in short tracks, commands Toyota number 11 and is always a name to watch on circuits like Bowman Gray. Outros highlights include Ross Chastain, from Trackhouse Racing, known for his aggressive riding style, and Tyler Reddick, from 23XI

News and substitutions mark the list of subscribers

One of the main news for the event is the temporary replacement in Ford number 6 of RFK Racing. Corey LaJoie takes the wheel in place of Brad Keselowski, who is recovering from a fractured right femur, bringing his short track experience to a top team.

The participation of Burt Myers, a local Bowman Gray Stadium legend with multiple titles in the Modified division, adds a special touch to the competition. Pelo for the second year in a row, he represents the circuit’s tradition by competing against the biggest names in the category, driving the Team AmeriVet team car.

The grid also has the presence of open teams looking for their space, such as Garage 66, with driver Chad Finchum in Ford number 66.

These entries diversify the grid and reinforce the competitive spirit of the event, where drivers from different backgrounds and experience levels come together to compete intensely for a limited number of places.

The historic stage of Bowman Gray Stadium

Known as “The Madhouse” (The Manicômio) for the intensity of its racing, the Bowman Gray Stadium is one of the most iconic venues in American motorsports. In continuous activity since 1949, it is considered by Nascar to be the oldest flat track in operation, having hosted Cup Series events between 1958 and 1971.

The return of the Clash to this circuit in 2025 has revitalized national interest in the historic site. The quarter-mile layout favors contact between cars and aggressive strategies, creating an unpredictable spectacle that pleases both veteran and new fans.

Teams prepare for single-day challenge

Concentrating all activities on a single day represents a significant logistical and technical challenge for teams. With limited track time, every minute will be crucial in finding the ideal car setup for the track and weather conditions.

The intense cold expected for Monday night will directly affect tire behavior and initial grip. Teams will have to adjust settings during short training sessions to maximize performance, making the experience of engineers and crew chiefs crucial.

The tight schedule begins with training in the early afternoon, followed by classification and repechage. The main race, scheduled to begin at 8pm ET, will cap off an intense day of activities at the historic stadium.

The importance of the exhibition event

Despite not being worth championship points, Cook Out Clash plays a fundamental role in preparing for the season. The race offers the first real opportunity for teams to test their cars in competition conditions, evaluating the performance of new components and the rapport between drivers and engineers ahead of the iconic Daytona 500.

Complete grid and diversity of competitors

The main organizations of Cup Series are present in force, with Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing lining up four cars each. Equipes like Richard Childress Racing, with Kyle Busch and Austin Dillon, and Trackhouse Racing, with its expanded lineup, are also ready to compete.

With 38 cars registered for just 23 places, competition will be extremely high from the first session. Essa fierce competition for a place in the main event raises the level of the spectacle and ensures that only the fastest and most consistent will participate in the final race.
