Despite a dominant first half from City, neither team managed to break the deadlock before the interval, setting the stage for a second half filled with unexpected twists and turns. The intensity of the rivalry was palpable throughout the match, reflecting the high stakes involved for both clubs.

Liverpool’s stunning breakthrough at Anfield

The breakthrough in the match arrived after a goalless first half, with Liverpool seizing the initiative. Dominik Szoboszlai delivered a spectacular moment, finding the back of the net with an extraordinary free-kick from nearly 30 meters out.

His strike, a trivela shot with significant swerve and power, left the goalkeeper with no chance and ignited the Anfield atmosphere. This stunning goal, scored 29 minutes into the second half, briefly put Liverpool ahead in the fiercely contested fixture.

City’s comeback begins with Haaland’s assist

Manchester City responded just ten minutes after falling behind, demonstrating their resilience and attacking prowess. Erling Haaland played a pivotal role in creating the equalizer, skillfully heading a cross over the static Liverpool defense.

The ball found Bernardo Silva at the edge of the six-yard box, who made no mistake with his finish, leveling the score. This rapid response from City underscored their determination to claw their way back into the game and maintain their title aspirations.

Controversial penalty seals late victory

As the match entered its decisive injury time, a contentious moment unfolded inside the penalty area. Matheus Nunes, driving towards goal, was brought down by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, prompting the referee to immediately point to the spot.

Erling Haaland stepped up to take the resulting penalty, converting it clinically and sending the ball past Alisson. This late goal not only completed Manchester City’s comeback but also delivered a crucial blow to Liverpool’s hopes of holding on for a point at home.

The decision sparked debate among fans and pundits, but the spot-kick stood, swinging the momentum firmly in City’s favor during the dying moments of the game. Haaland’s composure under pressure proved to be the difference maker in a match that had already seen its fair share of drama.

Anfield’s chaotic climax and red card

The final minutes of the match descended into further chaos following Haaland’s penalty, providing a dramatic end to the proceedings. In an unusual turn of events, Liverpool’s Alisson ventured forward into City’s half in a desperate attempt to grab an equalizer.

During the frantic play, Rayan Cherki managed to score for City from midfield, an incredible long-range effort, while Haaland and Szoboszlai were simultaneously grappling for the ball inside the penalty area. However, the celebration was short-lived as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervened, disallowing Cherki’s goal after a review.

The VAR review also identified a separate infringement: Dominik Szoboszlai was shown a red card for pulling Haaland’s jersey during their tussle. This dual incident added to the controversy, with Szoboszlai’s expulsion reducing Liverpool to ten men. City was awarded a free-kick, which Cherki struck over the bar into the stands, before the final whistle confirmed their hard-earned victory.

Premier league title race tightens significantly

Manchester City’s victory at Anfield holds profound implications for the Premier League title race as it pushes them closer to Arsenal. The Gunners now face intensified pressure with their lead reduced to just six points, making every subsequent match critical for both contenders.

This result not only boosts City’s confidence but also ensures that the fight for the championship will likely go down to the wire. With both teams demonstrating exceptional form and resilience throughout the 2024-2025 season, the remaining fixtures promise high drama and intense competition, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
