A new patent filed by Sony Interactive Entertainment indicates an innovative direction for future PlayStation-branded video game controllers. The document describes a controller equipped with a large touch-sensitive surface that would allow players to freely move and customize the position of buttons, such as the digital directional pad and action buttons.

The proposed technology aims to enhance the user experience by offering an unprecedented level of customization. According to the schemes presented in the registration, the traditionally fixed layout of the controls could be adapted to different hand sizes, playing styles or specific accessibility needs, an increasingly relevant topic in the games industry.

The filing, which was made public recently, was originally submitted in February 2023, signaling that the company is already actively exploring concepts that could shape the next generation of hardware. Embora registering a patent does not guarantee the launch of a commercial product, it offers a clear view of the Japanese giant’s research and development areas.

How customizable technology would work

The patent details a system where the top part of the control, which normally houses the physical buttons, would be replaced by a touch screen. Sobre this screen, virtual representations of the classic PlayStation buttons would be projected, such as the circle, square, triangle and X, in addition to the D-pad.

Players could, through a configuration interface, drag and drop these virtual buttons to any location on the surface, saving different profiles for different games or users. The idea is that ergonomics stops being a single standard and becomes a personal and dynamic configuration.

Implications for accessibility in games

One of the biggest potential benefits of this technology lies in the field of accessibility. Jogadores with motor disabilities or conditions that make it difficult to use standard controls could create layouts fully adapted to their needs, eliminating physical barriers that currently limit access to many games.

This approach aligns with a growing movement in the industry that seeks to make games more inclusive. The ability to adjust not just the position, but potentially the size and sensitivity of the buttons represents a significant advancement over existing software remapping options.

Sony has already demonstrated its commitment to accessibility through the launch of the Access controller for the PlayStation 5, a modular kit designed for gamers with disabilities. The new patent can be seen as the next logical step on this journey, integrating flexibility directly into the platform’s core control.

The evolution of PlayStation controllers

Since the first PlayStation, the Sony has been a driving force in the evolution of controller design. The original model established the ergonomic shape with side “footprints” that has become the industry standard. Pouco time later, the DualShock introduced dual analog sticks and vibration function, revolutionizing the way players interacted with 3D worlds.

The PlayStation 3 generation brought the Sixaxis, with its motion sensors, although the market response was mixed. With the PlayStation 4, the DualShock 4 added a central touchpad, a “Share” button and a light bar, integrating new social and interaction features.

Currently, the PlayStation 5’s DualSense is widely praised for its immersive technologies such as high-definition haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Essas innovations focus on increasing the player’s sensory immersion.

The patent for a customizable touch screen control suggests a change in focus, from immersion to personalization and ergonomics. Seria an evolution that not only adds a new layer of interaction, but fundamentally alters the physical interface between the player and the game, something that has remained relatively static for decades.

Comparison with the current market and competitors

In the current scenario, hardware customization is predominantly explored in “Pro” or “Elite” controls, which offer interchangeable components, such as sticks of different heights and rear paddles. The Xbox Elite Controller from Microsoft is a prominent example, allowing players to swap parts and adjust analog stick tension. However, even on these models, the position of the face buttons and D-pad remains fixed.

Sony’s proposal for a fully dynamic surface is radically different. If realized, it would put PlayStation ahead in terms of interface innovation. The Nintendo, for its part, has been exploring asymmetrical and modular designs with the Joy-Cons of the Switch, but the idea of a fluid layout in a single piece of hardware has not yet been commercially implemented by any major manufacturers.

Technical challenges and the tactile experience

Implementing touchscreen-based control presents significant challenges. Chief among them is the loss of physical tactile feedback. Jogadores rely on the sensation of pressing a button to confirm an action, and a flat glass surface does not provide that response. To circumvent this, the Sony would need to employ extremely advanced haptic feedback technology capable of simulating the sensation of a click or the texture of a button under the player’s finger. The DualSense’s own haptic technology could be a starting point for this solution, but it would need to be improved to provide localized and accurate responses across the entire surface of the screen. Outros challenges include battery consumption, screen durability against drops and scratches, and production costs, which could increase the price of the controller and, consequently, the console.

The future of DualSense and the PlayStation 6

It’s unlikely that such a drastic change would be implemented in a mid-generation revision of the PlayStation 5. It’s more plausible that this technology is being considered for the console’s successor, the hypothetical PlayStation 6. The introduction of a new control paradigm often accompanies the launch of a new generation of hardware, as was the case with the DualSense with the PS5.
