The automotive industry is going through a decisive moment of transformation, especially in the sports compact segment, where tradition meets the need for electrification. The Volkswagen defined the future of one of its most iconic acronyms, confirming that the legacy of the Polo GTI will continue to live on through a new fully electric platform. The project, based on the ID.GTI concept, not only seeks to replace the combustion model, but to reinterpret sportiness for a new era, maintaining the DNA that has established the brand over the last five decades.
This transition represents more than a simple engine change, as it involves the complete re-engineering of vehicle dynamics to ensure that the driving sensation remains engaging. The German automaker chose to use the MEB Entry platform, developed specifically for compact vehicles, allowing it to optimize internal space and performance. Diferente compared to other models in the ID family that adopt rear-wheel drive, this new sports car will maintain traction on the front axle, a historic characteristic that defines the agile behavior of GTI models.

The commercial launch is expected to take place between 2026 and 2027, positioning the model as a centerpiece in the brand’s affordable electrification strategy. The expectation is that the vehicle will fill the gap left by combustion models, attracting both technology enthusiasts and purists looking for performance. The development focuses on balancing energy efficiency with immediate power delivery, fundamental characteristics to compete in a market increasingly contested by new global manufacturers.
Performance and simulation technologies
The mechanical package designed for the successor to the Polo GTI promises to exceed the category’s power expectations, delivering around 166 kW, equivalent to 226 horsepower. Esta configuration puts the electric model above its gasoline predecessors in terms of brute force, guaranteeing vigorous accelerations typical of electric motors. Para manage this power delivery, Volkswagen engineering has equipped the front axle with an electronic differential lock, ensuring that traction is transmitted to the ground efficiently, even in tight curves or surfaces with low grip.
The great technological innovation lies in the system called GTI Experience Control, which seeks to rescue tactile and auditory sensations from traditional driving. Através of this feature, the driver will be able to adjust not only the steering and accelerator response, but also experience a simulation of the behavior of the brand’s historic models. The system is capable of recreating the engine sound of past generations, simulating gear shift points to engage the driver and adjusting the chassis to replicate the rigidity of competition cars, creating a bridge between the analogue past and the digital future.
Nostalgic design and functional autonomy
Visually, the project seeks a fusion between retro elements and the modernity of the electrical lines, maintaining the unmistakable visual identity of the sports line. The front features the traditional red line on the grille, now integrated with matrix LED headlights, while the compact proportions with short overhangs maximize internal space. Inside, the homage continues with the reinterpretation of the seats with a checkered print and a sports steering wheel that features the 12 o’clock marking, as well as a 10.9-inch configurable digital panel that recalls classic dials.
Daily usability was prioritized with the installation of a 56 kWh battery, sized to offer an ideal balance between weight and autonomy. Segundo the WLTP test cycle, the vehicle will be able to travel up to 450 kilometers on a single charge, perfectly suited to urban use and medium-distance trips. The battery’s thermal management system has been improved to allow sporty driving sessions without loss of performance, overcoming a common challenge in the first generation of electric vehicles.
The charging infrastructure also received special attention, with support for fast direct current charging of up to 130 kW. Isso allows the battery to recover from 10% to 80% of its capacity in just 20 minutes, making life easier for drivers who depend on public networks. Além In addition, the model will be prepared for integration with smart home energy systems, allowing the scheduling of recharges at lower tariff times, combining performance and cost efficiency.
