Chinese manufacturer BYD consolidated its presence on the Asian automotive scene during Tokyo Auto Salon, an event held between January 9th and 11th, by presenting a new strategic line of vehicles. The highlight of the exhibition was the unveiling of the “Racco”, a compact electric model developed to meet the specificities of the local market, along with five other vehicles that make up the brand’s portfolio for this year. The move reinforces the company’s commitment to expanding its operations in the new energy vehicle segment in one of the most demanding markets in the world.

Participation in the event marked the automaker’s third consecutive year at this fair, considered one of the most important for the customization and tuning culture at Japão. The company’s strategy for 2026 is based on two main pillars: the introduction of models that fall into the “kei cars” (light vehicles) category and the expansion of the offer of plug-in hybrids. Esta approach aims to diversify options for Japanese consumers, offering alternatives ranging from compact urban mobility to mid-sized SUVs with high energy efficiency.

Technical specifications and autonomy of the Racco

The new Racco model is designed to offer versatility within the size limitations that define compact cars in the Japão. The vehicle will be available in two battery configurations, allowing consumers to choose the option that best suits their travel routine. The entry-level version is equipped with a 20 kWh battery, capable of delivering a range of more than 200 km in the standard driving cycle, ideal for strictly urban use and short journeys.

For drivers who need greater range, the automaker also presented a variant with a 30 kWh battery. Esta configuration increases autonomy to more than 300 km on a single charge, expanding the vehicle’s possibilities of use for short-distance intercity trips. The company confirmed that the official website dedicated to the Racco will go live in February, with pre-sales scheduled to begin in the summer, following the northern hemisphere calendar.

Hybrid technology and new models in the portfolio

In addition to the focus on fully electric compacts, the presentation highlighted DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligent) technology, aimed at plug-in hybrid vehicles. The Sealion 6 SUV, which hit the market at the end of 2025, was shown as a practical example of this technology, combining a 1.5-liter engine with a high-power electric unit. The model is positioned competitively in the segment, with a starting price below 4 million yen, seeking to attract consumers seeking the transition to electrification without giving up the autonomy of traditional fuels.

The exhibition line was completed by updates of already known models and new additions. The Dolphin Long Range and Atto 3 received limited editions with exclusive finishes, while the Seal sedan and the Sealion 7 crossover demonstrated the brand’s ability to operate in higher value-added segments. The diversification of the portfolio indicates a long-term strategy to establish a solid sales base in the Japão, covering different price ranges and consumer needs, from the efficiency of compacts to the performance of sports models.
