Apple releases feature on iOS that prevents exact location tracking by telephone operators
Apple has made available a new tool focused on protecting the data of users using their latest mobile devices. The feature, integrated into the recently launched operating system, aims to restrict telecommunications operators’ access to detailed geographic information, ensuring that only an approximate area is shared when using the cellular network.
Essa functionality acts directly on communication between the device and the transmission towers. Tradicionalmente, antenna triangulation allows you to know where the user is with a minimum margin of error, which is useful for emergency services, but also generates a constant digital trail. With the new barrier activated, this precision is diluted, informing telephone companies only the neighborhood or a general region, preserving the exact address of the smartphone owner.

The technology was designed not to interfere with the daily use experience. Segundo the manufacturer, activating precise tracking blocking does not degrade the quality of voice calls, sending SMS messages or browsing speed on 5G and 6G networks. The central objective is to give the consumer back control over what data is passively collected by the network infrastructure.
Especialistas in digital security point out that location data is a valuable asset in the current market. By limiting what is sent to operators, Apple closes one of the few doors that still remained open to the collection of metadata outside the user’s direct control, reinforcing its market positioning focused on privacy as a fundamental right.
Exclusivity linked to proprietary hardware
Implementing this feature not only depends on software, but requires deep integration with connectivity hardware. Because of this, the novelty is restricted to devices equipped with modems developed internally by the technology giant, known as C1 and C1X chips. Essa verticalization strategy allows finer control over how the signal is processed.
Atualmente, the list of compatible devices includes the iPhone Air, the iPhone 16e and the cellular connectivity versions of the iPad Pro with an M5 processor. Estes models represent the first wave of products to abandon third-party components in favor of the brand’s proprietary technology, a move that has been awaited by the industry for years.
The expectation is that compatibility will be expanded as new releases hit the market. Rumores indicate that the future iPhone 18 line, equipped with the next generation of connectivity chips (C2), will bring this protection in a native and improved form, consolidating the company’s independence in relation to external modem suppliers.
How to activate protection on the system
Para users who have eligible devices, activating the feature is a manual and simplified process, located within the network settings. Não a restart of the device is required, although the system may suggest a quick reconnection to the mobile network to apply the new privacy guidelines.
- Open the Ajustes application and select the Celular option.
- Tap Opções of Dados Celulares.
- Locate item Limitar Localização Precisa.
- Activate the switch to enable the lock.
Once enabled, the location icon in the status bar may behave differently, indicating that accuracy is being obfuscated for the carrier. The user retains the freedom to revert the configuration at any time, if he/she needs specific services that depend on exact triangulation via the mobile network.
Context and global expansion
The availability of the resource is also linked to the support of local operators. In countries like Alemanha, the functionality is already fully operational on selected networks, and Apple works together with global partners to ensure that telecommunications infrastructure accepts this new data masking protocol without rejecting device connections.
Além of location privacy, the operating system update brought important security fixes. Foram resolved vulnerabilities that could allow malicious code to be executed, as well as improvements to general interface stability and power management to extend battery life.
Outras aesthetic additions are also part of the package. Novos dynamic wallpapers that react to touch and visual updates to the weather app have been included, as well as improved tools to facilitate the migration of user data from the Android platform.
