The Brazilian automotive industry is experiencing a new chapter with the consolidation of the mass electrification strategy, led by the Toyota factory in Sorocaba, in the interior of São Paulo. The industrial complex has started production of a sports utility vehicle that promises to redefine fuel consumption standards in the country, combining the robustness of an SUV with the efficiency of a flex hybrid system. The model arrives to replace the previous lines of compacts, focusing on a segment that presents high demand and greater added value.

With an aggressive market positioning, the vehicle debuts with estimated prices in the range of R$130,000, seeking to democratize access to electrified technology. The decision to end production of the sedan and hatch versions of the Yaris was strategic to open up production capacity for this new project, which aligns the needs of the Brazilian driver with the Japanese automaker’s global decarbonization goals.

The choice for the flex hybrid engine reflects an intelligent adaptation to the local energy matrix, taking advantage of the existing ethanol infrastructure to offer a mobility solution with low carbon emissions. The model not only complies with the strictest environmental legislation, but also offers a practical alternative for those looking to save money without relying exclusively on electrical charging stations, which are still expanding throughout the country.

In addition to the impact on the consumer market, local production strengthens the Brazilian supply chain. The project foresees the manufacture of batteries on national soil from 2026, transforming Brasil into a technology export hub for the entire América Latina and reducing dependence on imported components.

Engine details and energy efficiency

The launch’s biggest competitive advantage lies in its mechanical package, designed to maximize efficiency without sacrificing urban performance. The hybrid system consists of:

  • An Atkinson 1.5 cycle combustion engine, capable of delivering up to 92 hp;
  • An 81 hp auxiliary electric motor, focused on immediate torque;
  • Combined power of 113 hp, managed by an e-CVT transmission;
  • Compact battery that allows it to run in 100% electric mode at low speeds.

Homologation tests revealed impressive numbers, positioning the SUV as an absolute reference in its category. In ideal conditions of urban use, the vehicle demonstrated the ability to reach marks above 30 km/l, although the practical average expected with the mixture of ethanol and Brazilian gasoline is around 25 km/l. Essa efficiency, combined with a 36-liter tank, provides a range that can reach 800 km, depending on the driver’s driving profile.

For the public that still prefers conventional engines, the automaker maintained an entry-level option equipped with a 110 hp 1.5 flex engine and CVT transmission. Mesmo Without electrical assistance, this version maintains its economy proposal, delivering averages of 13 km/l with gasoline, offering a robust alternative with simplified maintenance for daily use.

Functional design and space utilization

The look of the new SUV adopts lines that convey modernity and robustness, inspired by the brand’s “big brothers”, such as the RAV4 and the Corolla Cross. The trapezoidal front grille and full-LED optical assembly create a striking visual signature, while the horizontal rear lights increase the vehicle’s sense of width. Measuring 4.31 meters in length and with a wheelbase of 2.62 meters, the dimensions were calculated to ensure agility in urban traffic without compromising passenger comfort.

Inside, the intelligent use of space is one of the highlights of the project, surpassing several direct competitors. The trunk offers 471 liters in the combustion version and 466 liters in the hybrid, a minimal difference that preserves cargo capacity for family trips. The finish mixes durable materials with technology, highlighting the configurable digital panel and the 10.1-inch floating multimedia center, compatible with wireless mirroring for smartphones.

Active safety and assistive technologies

Safety was treated as a priority in the development of the project, which leaves the factory equipped with six airbags and a reinforced body structure for impact protection. The technological highlight is the Toyota Safety Sense package, which democratizes semi-autonomous driving features previously restricted to higher category vehicles.

The frontal pre-collision system acts as a “second pair of eyes”, detecting vehicles and pedestrians to alert the driver or automatically brake in emergencies. Adaptive cruise control (ACC) offers comfort on long journeys, adjusting the speed to maintain a safe distance from the car in front, while lane change alert corrects the trajectory if the driver becomes distracted, raising the standard of safety on highways.

Economic impact and competitive landscape

The arrival of this model is the result of an investment cycle that totals R$11 billion until 2030, with R$1.63 billion specifically allocated to modernizing the assembly lines for this vehicle. Esse industrial movement not only generates direct and indirect jobs in the Sorocaba region, but also sets the stage for the next phase of national electrification, with the deep localization of strategic components.

In the market, the new SUV will face strong competitors such as the Volkswagen T-Cross, Hyundai Creta and Honda HR-V. However, its proposal to be a full hybrid with a competitive price creates its own niche. The five-year warranty for the vehicle and eight years for the hybrid system aims to break the last barriers of consumer distrust, projecting annual sales of around 40 thousand units.

Brasil also takes on the role of an export platform, sending around 40% of production to 22 América Latina countries. Essa strategy consolidates the country’s regional leadership in the production of flex hybrid vehicles, a vital transition technology for emerging markets that seek sustainability, but still lack robust infrastructure for fully electric cars.
