Toyota’s most recent bet for the Brazilian market underwent rigorous evaluations on the Indaiatuba tracks, inside São Paulo, confirming its vocation for energy efficiency. The Yaris Cross arrives to occupy a strategic position in the compact sports utility vehicle segment, offering mechanics that combine electrification and liquid fuel. With prices ranging between R$172,390 in the entry-level version and R$189,990 in the most complete configuration, the model seeks to attract consumers focused on reducing daily expenses without giving up comfort.

The mechanical set features engineering aimed at intelligent urban use, combining a 1.5 flex engine with two electric thrusters. Essa combination delivers a total power of 111 horsepower, ensuring agility in traffic in large cities. Durante the dynamic tests, the vehicle demonstrated linear behavior, with emphasis on the silence on board at low speeds and quick responses to the accelerator.

Performance and efficiency-focused mechanics

The engine of the new utility uses a system that prioritizes economy, with the combustion engine generating 91 horsepower and 12.3 kgfm of torque, assisted by an 80 horsepower electric unit. Energy management is carried out by an e-CVT transmission, which changes gears imperceptibly and favors purely electric driving below 40 km/h. The energy regeneration system acts during braking, automatically recharging the battery and eliminating the need for external sockets.

The driver can opt for ECO mode to maximize performance in congestion or heavy traffic situations. Essa technology allows the car to switch between engines autonomously, always seeking the best relationship between performance and consumption. The lithium-ion battery, positioned under the rear seat, does not interfere with the interior space and contributes to the chassis’ weight balance.

Consumption exceeds expectations in practical tests

The official figures approved by the Inmetro already indicated high efficiency, with averages of 17.9 km/l in the city using gasoline. However, evaluations in real conditions of use exceeded expectations, recording marks close to 19.8 km/l on urban routes with the air conditioning on. On the road, consumption remains competitive, reaching 14.4 km/l, which reinforces the model’s versatility for both everyday life and travel.

When fueled with ethanol, the SUV maintains good figures, achieving 13.2 km/l in the urban cycle. The projected autonomy can reach 644 kilometers with a tank of gasoline, an important difference for those looking for long journeys without frequent stops. The multimedia panel displays energy flow in real time, encouraging more economical driving.

Internal space and comfort for passengers

The 2.62 meter wheelbase was used to ensure adequate accommodation for occupants of different heights, including in the rear seat. The presence of dedicated air conditioning outlets and USB-C ports for those traveling in the rear demonstrates the brand’s concern for the well-being of all passengers. The central tunnel, although elevated, was designed so as not to drastically compromise legroom.

For luggage, the trunk offers 391 liters of capacity in the hybrid versions, enough volume for family weekend demands. The top-of-the-line version adds the convenience of electrically opening the lid, making access easier when your hands are full. The internal finish follows a sober line, using high-resistance plastic materials designed for durability in continuous use.

Safety and driving assistance technology

Safety is one of the pillars of the project, with the inclusion of the Toyota Safety Sense package that monitors the environment around the vehicle. The system features autonomous emergency braking capable of detecting pedestrians and cyclists, as well as adaptive cruise control for road trips. The lane keeping assistant acts gently on the steering, correcting the trajectory if the driver becomes distracted.

The protection package includes six airbags distributed throughout the cabin and parking sensors at both the front and rear. Para maneuvers in tight spaces, the 360-degree camera and blind spot warning offer additional support, reducing the risk of minor urban collisions. The rear suspension was calibrated to filter irregularities in the asphalt, maintaining stability in tighter curves.

Market positioning and competition

Upon arriving at dealerships, the Yaris Cross is positioned as the gateway to the brand’s line of utility vehicles, being below the Corolla Cross in price and size. The XRX version stands out for its panoramic sunroof and configurable digital panel, items that elevate the perception of technology on board. The external design, with straight lines and a robust front grille, is reminiscent of the manufacturer’s larger models, such as the RAV4.

In direct comparison with rivals such as the Volkswagen T-Cross and Hyundai Creta, the Japanese model focuses on fuel economy and low maintenance costs as its main assets. Enquanto competitors offer turbo engines with greater gross power, the Toyota strategy focuses on energy efficiency and mechanical reliability, characteristics valued by those who use the vehicle intensively on a daily basis.
