Chinese manufacturer BYD has begun a comprehensive technical fix process aimed at one of its highest-selling plug-in hybrid vehicles in the Asian market. The safety measure was adopted after identifying an inconsistency in the voltage control modules, which could compromise the integrity of the electrical system and create operational risks for conductors.

Automotive market regulatory authorities confirmed that the recall campaign involves approximately 97 thousand units manufactured in a specific time interval. The decision reflects a rigorous quality protocol, where the automaker chose to intervene directly in the management software of affected vehicles to mitigate any possibility of extreme thermal incidents.

The central problem lies in the likelihood of incorrect battery voltage readings, which can prevent the protection systems from functioning properly in cases of overheating or electrical failure. Essa condition increases the potential risk to occupants and requires immediate recalibration of the hybrid system’s operating parameters.

Technical details about the voltage system failure

Internal investigations conducted by the automaker’s engineering revealed that the origin of the problem is in the voltage controller manufacturing process. Durante production, deviations occurred that left the components outside the ideal tolerance specifications, generating a physical irregularity in the hardware.

This failure causes the monitoring system to receive inaccurate data about the actual state of charge and electrical voltage of the power cells. Quando the management system receives distorted information, it loses the ability to identify anomalies in real time, creating a dangerous scenario where automatic power cut mechanisms may not be activated.

To understand the seriousness of the technical situation, it is necessary to note the following risks associated with the failure:

  • Inability of the software to detect the beginning of a thermal runaway in the battery;
  • Maintenance of cargo sending to cells that have already reached their operational limits;
  • Lack of activation of passive and active safety protocols in critical situations;
  • Vehicle vulnerability to fire outbreaks due to undiagnosed overheating.

The complexity of the DM-i hybrid system requires perfect synchronization between the combustion engine and the electrical system. A controller failure disrupts this harmony, making correction imperative to ensure the vehicle operates according to the original safety design.

Remote update procedure and driver safety

To resolve the defect without causing major logistical disruption to owners, BYD implemented a strategy based on connectivity technology. The correction will be carried out mainly via OTA (Over-the-Air) updates, a feature that allows you to change the vehicle’s software remotely, similar to updating a smartphone.

The focus of the update is the Sistema of Gerenciamento of Bateria (BMS), which will receive new operating parameters. The new software was developed to compensate for physical variations in the affected controllers, recalibrating the monitoring algorithms to correctly interpret electrical signals, even if they come from components with altered manufacturing tolerances.

If a remote update is not feasible due to hardware or connectivity limitations on specific units, the manufacturer will instruct owners to visit an authorized dealer. In Nessas situations, there will be physical intervention by specialized technicians to ensure that the control module is properly adjusted or replaced.

Impact on the fleet produced between 2021 and 2023

Tracking defective batches made it possible to precisely delimit the manufacturing period of vehicles at risk. The recall affects Qin Plus DM-i units assembled between January 2021 and September 2023, an interval that corresponds to a phase of aggressive expansion of the brand in the electrified vehicle segment.

The model is considered a strategic key piece for the brand, combining energy efficiency with extended autonomy. The popularity of the vehicle makes the scale of the recall significant, requiring an efficient logistical operation to ensure communication reaches all owners and maintains consumer confidence.

Challenges in managing high voltage batteries

The episode highlights the critical importance of BMS in the safety of modern vehicles. Este system acts as the brain of the battery pack, constantly monitoring the voltage, current and temperature of each cell. Quando the input data provided by sensors or controllers is flawed, the entire vehicle safety logic is compromised.

The solution adopted by BYD reinforces the trend that the maintenance of electric vehicles will increasingly depend on digital diagnostics and corrections via software. As cars become computing platforms on wheels, the ability to correct hardware failures through programming adjustments becomes an essential tool for ensuring the longevity and safety of the global fleet.
