Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard has revealed crucial details about the technical infrastructure that will underpin the studio’s next major release. In a recent conversation with the channel Kinda Funny Games, the executive confirmed that the sixth chapter of the main fantasy saga is being built on Creation Engine 3, an improved and polished version of the technology that powered previous releases. The choice reinforces the company’s commitment to keeping its internal tools updated to the demands of the new generation of consoles and computers.

Technical evolution and game fluidity

The decision to maintain a proprietary graphics engine, instead of migrating to popular market options such as Unreal Engine 5, was described as strategic to preserve the unique identity of the developer’s mechanics. Howard explained that the new iteration of the tool was designed to eliminate long-standing processing bottlenecks, specifically focusing on drastically reducing loading screens and smoothly transitioning between indoor and outdoor environments.

Bethesda engineers have dedicated the last few years to refining object rendering and world physics, ensuring that the series’ classic interactivity remains intact. The central goal is to deliver a level of near-camera visual detail far greater than previously seen, without compromising the vast scale of the map that fans have come to expect.

Priority on immersion and mod support

With the project operating in the full production phase and involving most of the company’s studios, the team seeks to restore the feeling of organic discovery present in renowned titles such as Skyrim. The engine update also promises to facilitate the work of the modder community, maintaining the tradition of longevity of the developer’s titles through content created by the users themselves.

In addition to graphical improvements, Creation Engine 3 brings significant advances in NPC artificial intelligence and dynamic lighting. Essas changes aim to create a more reactive and living world, where the player’s actions have visible consequences on the environment, overcoming the technical limitations faced in past projects like Starfield.
