Subaru announced the start of production of the Trailseeker electric SUV at its Yajima factory, in Japão, from February 2026. The modification to the production line began in August 2025 and was completed within the expected deadline, allowing greater flexibility in manufacturing in the face of variations in demand.

The Trailseeker is the second vehicle in the global line of BEVs developed in partnership with Toyota, an alliance that celebrates 20 years in 2025. The collaboration between the two companies covers development, production and supply chain, with an increasing focus on the area of electrification. Mixed production reinforces Subaru’s ability to quickly adapt its manufacturing to changes in the automotive market.

The Yajima factory, located in Gunma, underwent specific adjustments to integrate the BEV assembly processes without compromising the efficiency of ICE vehicles, including hybrids. Essa approach allows Subaru to respond quickly to consumer preferences for different types of propulsion.

Start of production and technical adaptations

The modified production line allows the alternating assembly of models with combustion and electric engines. Técnicos from Subaru adjusted processes to ensure compatibility with high-capacity batteries and electrical systems, without interruptions in the production chain. The measure avoids separate investments in exclusive lines for trams.

Experts highlight that mixed production reduces operational costs and optimizes the use of existing infrastructure. Subaru already has consolidated experience in flexible manufacturing, which facilitated the transition to include BEVs in the same line.

Details of the SUV Trailseeker

The Trailseeker offers symmetrical all-wheel drive adapted for an electric platform, with a combined power of 375 horsepower. The model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in around 4.4 seconds, becoming the fastest production vehicle in the history of Subaru in the Estados Unidos. The estimated autonomy varies depending on the configuration, reaching more than 450 km in real conditions for some versions.

Equipped with a 74.7 kWh lithium-ion battery, the SUV has a NACS charging port, compatible with wide fast charging networks. The system reaches up to 80% charge in around 28 minutes on high-power chargers. Recursos as battery preconditioning maintains performance in cold climates.

Design features and off-road performance

The Trailseeker has a ground clearance of approximately 21.6 cm, ideal for uneven terrain. The X-MODE system includes specific modes for snow/dirt and deep snow/mud, as well as descent control and Grip Control. All-wheel drive distributes torque variably between axles and wheels, improving stability during acceleration, braking and cornering.

The exterior design incorporates a lighting signature exclusive to Subaru EVs, with redesigned headlights and 18- or 20-inch wheels. Inside, the panel features a 14-inch multimedia screen, the largest ever used in the brand’s vehicles. Bancos heated and ventilated front seats, in addition to leather or synthetic material finishes, make up the finishing options.

Versions and market availability

The Trailseeker comes in three main versions: Premium, Limited and Touring. The entry-level version includes EyeSight driving assistant, 18-inch alloy wheels and wireless charging for smartphones. Superior Versões add a premium sound system, panoramic monitor and electrically operated panoramic roof.

On Japão, production began in February 2026, with an announcement expected in the spring of the same year. Nos Estados Unidos, the model hits the market in early 2026, with prices starting at around US$40,000. Assembly takes place exclusively at the Yajima factory.

Subaru-Toyota partnership and electrification strategy

The collaboration that began in 2005 evolved into joint projects in electrification. The Trailseeker integrates the second generation of global BEVs from the two brands, sharing platform elements and components. Essa partnership allows economies of scale in the battery and electric motor supply chain.

Subaru seeks greater independence in the production of electric vehicles, reducing external dependence. The ability to produce BEVs in-house strengthens the brand’s competitiveness in markets that require diverse propulsion options.

Benefits of mixed production for industry

The adoption of mixed lines represents progress in the energy transition in the automotive sector. Fabricantes can balance production volumes between combustion and electrical without duplicating facilities. Essa strategy minimizes risks in periods of technological transition.

Subaru plans to expand the application of similar technologies to other factories. The experience gained at Yajima can serve as a model for future adaptations in global installations.
