The automotive hub of Goiana, in Pernambuco, is preparing for one of the most significant industrial transformations in its recent history, aiming to completely renew its utility portfolio. Stellantis confirmed the development of the next generation of its best-selling mid-range pickup truck, scheduled for launch in 2029, marking the end of the current model cycle and the beginning of a new technological era for the Brazilian manufacturing unit.

This strategic change involves replacing the current architecture with the modern STLA Medium platform, a global base developed to support the massive electrification of the company’s fleet. The decision aligns national production with the latest European standards, allowing the vehicle to share vital components and engineering solutions with sophisticated models on the international market, such as the new generation of Peugeot SUVs.

The adoption of this new production matrix not only updates the final product, but also reconfigures the local supply chain, requiring new investments in tooling and technical training. The project aims to maintain market leadership in a segment that is becoming increasingly competitive with the arrival of Asian and North American rivals.

Structural evolution with the STLA base Medium

The introduction of the STLA Medium platform represents a qualitative leap in terms of torsional rigidity and use of internal space, overcoming the limitations of the current base. Projetada to be modular, this architecture allows the installation of high-capacity batteries in the floor without compromising cabin space or cargo capacity, a crucial factor for the versatility required in the pickup truck segment.

In addition to structural robustness, the new base facilitates the integration of cutting-edge electronic systems, essential for the autonomous driving and connectivity functions that will be mandatory in the next decade. Stellantis engineering works to adapt this global technology to the driving conditions of the América and

Hybridization and energy efficiency

The mechanical package will undergo a complete overhaul to meet future emissions standards, with the 1.3 Turbo Flex engine taking on a new role within an electrified ecosystem. The central strategy focuses on the implementation of the Bio-Hybrid system, which combines combustion propulsion with electrical assistance to reduce consumption and increase the torque available at low speeds.

48-volt mild-hybrid technology will be the gateway to this new phase, replacing the conventional alternator and starter motor with a multifunctional electric generator. Esse system allows the combustion engine to turn off in situations of cruising speed or braking, recovering energy to feed an auxiliary lithium-ion battery.

Although the STLA Medium platform supports 100% electric configurations with ranges exceeding 500 kilometers, the initial focus for the Brazilian market will remain on flex hybrid technology. Essa choice reflects the local supply infrastructure and the relevance of ethanol as a renewable fuel in the brand’s decarbonization strategy for the region.

The transmission must also evolve, with the possible adoption of oil-bathed dual-clutch gearboxes in specific versions, optimized to manage the combined power delivery of the electric and thermal engines. Isso promises to eliminate delays in throttle response and provide more fluid driving in urban environments.

Visual identity and technological leap

The design of the new pickup truck will draw direct inspiration from the futuristic trends applied by Peugeot in the Europa, breaking with the visual conservatism of some competitors. The intention is to create a product that moves between the robustness necessary for work and the sophistication required by customers who use the vehicle as a passenger car, incorporating distinct visual elements and an advanced light signature.

Inside, the revolution will be digital, with the abandonment of analogue displays in favor of fully configurable and connected interfaces. The technological package planned for the 2029 model includes a series of innovations focused on user experience and active safety:

  • Panoramic digital panels that integrate the instrument cluster and multimedia center into a single curved surface;
  • Level 2+ advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), allowing autonomous interventions on highways and urban traffic;
  • Optical set with pixel technology, capable of adjusting the light beam so as not to dazzle other drivers while maintaining maximum illumination;
  • Native 5G connectivity for over-the-air (OTA) software updates and communication with smart road infrastructure.

Impact on production and competitiveness

The confirmation of production of this new model in Goiana reaffirms the importance of the northeastern automotive hub within the global strategy of Este move anticipates the manufacturer’s response to moves by competitors who also announced robust investment cycles in the Brasil, ensuring that the pickup maintains its innovation attributes that have made it a sales reference since its original launch.
