General Motors began a large-scale safety campaign covering more than 43,000 sport utility vehicles across its main divisions. The preventive movement aims to correct a mechanical failure identified in the transmission system which, in extreme situations, can compromise drivability and occupant safety. The central problem lies in the possibility of the rear wheels locking while driving, a scenario that substantially increases the risk of accidents on highways and urban fast-traffic roads.

The automaker’s engineers detected that the anomaly is restricted to models manufactured in 2022, equipped with diesel engines and a ten-speed automatic transmission, specifically those that use the precision electronic gear selection system. The failure is not a simple assembly error, but rather premature wear on a critical internal component, which required an immediate technical response from the corporation to avoid serious occurrences on the roads.

The specific defect occurs in the transmission control valve, a fundamental part for managing hydraulic pressure inside the gearbox. Over time and use, this valve can lose its ability to maintain adequate pressure, which confuses the vehicle’s electronic system. In an attempt to protect the engine and transmission from further damage, the car’s software may inadvertently engage a park or lock gear while the vehicle is still moving, resulting in the drive wheels stopping abruptly.

To mitigate this risk, the solution developed by the technical team does not initially involve the physical replacement of the entire transmission, but rather a robust update of the management software. The new code to be installed at dealerships will have the ability to monitor valve wear in real time. Caso an anomaly is detected, the system will limit the vehicle’s operation safely, preventing the wheels from locking and alerting the driver about the need for immediate maintenance.

Affected models and production schedule

The scope of this recall directly affects the luxury and large segment of the General Motors. Owners should check their vehicle documentation, as the campaign specifically covers Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet Suburban units. Além of these, the premium line was also impacted, including the Cadillac Escalade and its elongated version, the Escalade ESV. The GMC division is also on the call list with the Yukon and Yukon XL models.

The automaker’s internal investigation was able to trace the origin of the defective parts, limiting the scope of the problem to transmissions manufactured within a specific window of time. The compromised units left the production line between April and September 2022.

It is important to highlight that, at the time of publishing this campaign, General Motors has identified 13 incidents related to this specific failure in the field. Embora Although these reports served as the basis for the investigation and subsequent recall decision, there was no confirmation of injuries or accidents with serious physical harm to passengers. The action is treated as a severe precautionary measure to maintain the safety standards of the brands involved.

Technical procedures and customer service

The repair protocol established by the automaker is entirely software-based and will be carried out at no cost to owners of affected vehicles. Upon arriving at the dealership, the vehicle will undergo an electronic diagnosis where the transmission control module will receive the new programming. Este advanced software acts as an extra layer of surveillance, capable of detecting pressure loss long before it becomes critical enough to lock the rear wheels.

General Motors instructed its dealer network to prioritize these services, given the potential for danger involved in locking wheels at high speeds. The valve wear detection system will work continuously after the update. If the software identifies that the valve is failing, it will prevent sudden downshifts that could cause it to stall and illuminate a warning light on the instrument panel, instructing the driver to seek technical service, but allowing the car to be driven safely to the repair location.

Automotive safety experts warn that ignoring recall calls involving transmission and brake systems is extremely dangerous. Proprietários of the aforementioned models, especially those purchased or manufactured in 2022, must immediately contact the official Chevrolet, Cadillac or GMC channels to schedule the service. Updating the software is a relatively quick procedure, but vital to ensuring the mechanical integrity of the SUV and the safety of everyone on board.
