The opening stage of the season from Mundial of Motovelocidade to Circuito Internacional of Chang brought an unexpected and frustrating outcome for one of the grid’s protagonists. Marc Márquez saw his podium chances disappear after a technical incident caused by a risky maneuver during the fight for the top positions. The Spanish rider, who was driving the new Ducati Desmosedici GP26, was forced to abandon the main race after his motorcycle’s rear tire suffered a sudden puncture, forcing him to retire to the pits and end his participation earlier than planned.

The incident occurred on the twenty-first lap of the race, when the competition in the front group was intense. Márquez was fighting a fierce battle for third place, exchanging positions and studying opponents in a group that included Marco Bezzecchi, Pedro Acosta and Raúl Fernández. The intensity of the dispute led the Spaniard to look for the limit of the route, resulting in a calculation error that cost him dearly for his championship score.

The error in turn four and the mechanical failure

The dynamics of the accident were clarified shortly after the end of the race, with the Ducati technical team analyzing the telemetry data and the physical damage to the bike. When trying to gain an advantage over Raúl Fernández in turn four, Márquez widened his trajectory too much and ended up passing aggressively over the inside curb. The violent impact against the concrete structure did not damage the suspension, but hit a critical point on the rear wheel.

The shock resulted in the tire’s air valve immediately breaking, causing instant depressurization. The sudden loss of grip almost caused a crash at high speed, but the rider’s skill allowed him to control the bike and avoid a major accident in the escape area. Sem able to continue on the track with an empty tire, abandonment was inevitable, leaving the team without the points expected for its debut.

In statements after the race, the driver himself assumed full responsibility for what happened, exempting the tire manufacturer or the team from any failure to prepare. Ele explained that the incessant search to reduce the gap to the leaders made him risk a very tight line at the exit of the curve, where contact with the highest part of the curb became fatal for the equipment.

Consequences for the championship and victory of Bagnaia

While Márquez dealt with the frustration of retirement, the race continued with the dominance of the Ducati factory team. Francesco Bagnaia confirmed favoritism and crossed the finish line in first place, guaranteeing the initial leadership of the table. Jorge Martín completed the double for the Italian bikes, securing second place on the podium and showing that the fight for the title promises to be fierce from the first stage.

For Márquez, the result means starting the year with a zero in the score, which increases the pressure for the next steps. Apesar having started from second position on the grid and demonstrating a competitive pace during training and the start of the race, the failure of judgment in Tailândia serves as a warning. The need for recovery will be immediate in the next round, where the driver will need to convert the GP26’s speed into concrete points so as not to let his rivals open up a significant advantage at the beginning of the calendar.
