The Nasa Mike Fincke astronaut confirmed that he was the crew member who presented a medical event aboard Estação Espacial Internacional in January this year. The incident prompted the space agency to end SpaceX’s Crew-11 mission early, marking the first dedicated medical evacuation in the history of the ISS. The crew returned to Terra on January 15, about a month earlier than planned, after the problem occurred on January 7.

Fincke, 58 years old, a veteran with extensive experience in space missions, highlighted the speed of the team’s response. Ele suffered the medical event while preparing for a spacewalk alongside colleague Zena Cardman. The condition required immediate attention from crewmates, who followed instructions from Nasa doctors on land.

Stabilization occurred quickly thanks to the support of the crew and flight surgeons. Nasa evaluated the available options and opted for a coordinated return of the entire team. The objective was to allow access to advanced imaging exams unavailable on the orbital station.

Incident details and immediate response

The crew of Expedição 74 acted immediately upon noticing Fincke’s painting. Colegas as well as Zena Cardman, Kimiya Yui and Oleg Platonov provided first care. Equipamentos available on the ISS, including ultrasound, helped in the initial assessment of the problem.

Doctors on the ground monitored the situation in real time. The decision to bring forward the return prioritized safety and the possibility of more accurate diagnoses. Fincke emphasized that the episode did not constitute an emergency, but required specific terrestrial medical resources.

The space agency initially maintained secrecy about the identity of the affected crew member. Medical privacy followed standard Nasa protocols. Apenas recently Fincke authorized the public disclosure of his participation in the case.

Return to Terra and post-flight procedures

The Crew Dragon Endeavour capsule undocked from the ISS on January 14 and landed on Oceano Pacífico, near the coast of San Diego, the following day. The operation took place at Califórnia local time. Equipes recovery assisted the four astronauts shortly after the splashdown.

Fincke and the others were initially taken to a hospital on San Diego for preliminary evaluations. The next day, they went to Houston, at Texas. The astronaut began the standard post-flight reconditioning process on the Centro Espacial Johnson.

Full ground examinations were performed with advanced imaging technologies. Fincke reported reassuring results and said he was on the path to full recovery. Ele continues the readaptation protocol to Earth’s gravity at the center of Nasa.

Acknowledgments and context of the mission

Fincke expressed deep gratitude to colleagues at Expedição 74, including Zena Cardman, Kimiya Yui, Oleg Platonov, Chris Williams, Ele also acknowledged the support of the teams at Nasa, SpaceX and medical professionals at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.

The Crew-11 mission began in August 2025 with launch via SpaceX. The four crew members carried out various scientific and maintenance activities on the ISS for five and a half months. The incident disrupted plans such as the spacewalk scheduled for January 8.

The reduced presence at the station upon return required adjustments to the remaining crew. Três astronauts remained to maintain basic operations until new members arrived. Nasa monitored the impact on the overall mission schedule.

Current recovery and reflections of the astronaut

Currently, Mike Fincke follows the standard reconditioning in Centro Espacial Johnson, in Houston. The process includes physical exercises for muscle and bone readaptation after a long period in microgravity. Ele described recovering very well.

The veteran astronaut highlighted the human nature of space missions. Ele reinforced that space flights represent an incredible privilege, but remind us of the vulnerability of the human body. The experience reinforced the importance of medical preparation in orbit.

Nasa maintains strict crew health protocols. Casos like this help improve future procedures. Fincke continues to contribute to the space program even during the recovery phase.
