A man was arrested red-handed by Guarda Civil Municipal after making racist insults against employees at a supermarket in Jataí, in the southwest of Goiás. The episode occurred on Saturday (March 7), when the suspect was making irregular sales at the door of the establishment and reacted badly to the workers’ instructions to stop the activity. Ele called the victims “monkeys”, spat on at least one of them and attacked anyone trying to intervene in the confusion.
The scene was recorded on video by one of the employees, who captured the moment in which the man argues, utters continuous insults and tries to aggressively approach the person he was filming. A woman present at the scene held the suspect by the arm, preventing him from reaching the victim. Mesmo restrained, the man maintained the racial insults and spat again towards one of the supermarket employees.
Guarda Civil Municipal was called by Central of Operações and arrived at the scene during the confusion. The agents reported that the suspect continued to be upset, even directing offensive words at his own guards. Durante the approach, he provided false information about his identity, which constituted yet another crime.
Details of the police approach
Civil guards isolated the area to contain the situation and prevent the man’s aggression from spreading to other people. Ele verbally resisted the intervention and maintained an aggressive tone throughout the procedure.
The arrest in the act occurred at the location of the events, based on the crimes directly observed by the agents and the images recorded.
Video recording and reactions of victims
The audiovisual material clearly shows the sequence of events, from the initial argument to the acts of spitting and physical advances. Employees reported a feeling of humiliation when faced with offenses specifically targeted at racial motivation.
One of the workers who filmed the scene handed the video to Guarda Civil Municipal to help confirm the facts. The images circulated on social media and among residents of the region.
Crimes attributed to the suspect
The man responded for racial insult, equated to racism under Brazilian legislation, in addition to real insult for the act of spitting on the victims and threat for intimidating conduct against those trying to defend the employees.
He was also charged with contempt due to the insults committed against municipal civil guards during his arrest. The declared false identity aggravated the set of accusations.
Referral to Justiça and release
The suspect was taken to Unidade Prisional of Jataí shortly after arrest, as the crimes charged do not require bail. Polícia Civil registered the incident report and took the necessary steps.
At the custody hearing held later, the judge decided to release the man, who is now free to face charges. The court decision considered the legal criteria applicable to the case.
Irregular on-site sales context
According to information from Guarda Civil Municipal, the man carried out street sales at the entrance of the supermarket without authorization. The employees’ guidance aimed to comply with municipal regulations and internal rules of the commercial establishment.
The prohibition of irregular commercial activities at store doors is common in several cities to organize the flow of pedestrians and avoid inconvenience to customers and workers.
Measures against racial slurs in Brasil
Brazilian legislation treats racial slurs as an imprescriptible and non-bailable crime in many cases, with penalties that can reach several years in prison depending on the circumstances. The act of spitting constitutes a real insult, aggravating the sentence.
Similar cases have been recorded in different regions, with an increase in complaints facilitated by the possibility of recording videos taken on cell phones. Authorities encourage the recording of evidence to strengthen investigations.
The suspect remains obliged to appear in court to respond to the charges formalized by Polícia Civil.
