The hacker attack on Rockstar Games resulted in corporate data being released online last week. The information, obtained by cybercriminals, exposed details about the financial operations and player base of titles such as GTA Online and Red Dead Online. The company refused to pay the ransom, which led to the publication of the material.

Although it did not contain information about the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI, the leak revealed the magnitude of revenue generated by the producer’s online modes. The numbers show a significant difference between the success of GTA Online and the performance of Red Dead Online. The data also details the distribution of profits between game platforms and the impact on the developer’s strategic decisions.

Significant profits from GTA Online and Red Dead Online

The Rockstar Games data leak confirmed the colossal disparity between the revenue generated by its two main multiplayer titles. Grand Theft Auto Online, the online aspect of GTA V, achieves an average weekly revenue of almost US$9.6 million. In contrast, Red Dead Online, the multiplayer component of Red Dead Redemption 2, generated just over $500,000 per week. Essa difference of more than 19 times in profits explains Rockstar’s decision to prioritize the development and content of GTA Online, while Red Dead Online has received less attention in recent years. The revenue disparity reaffirms GTA Online’s position as one of the biggest money-making machines in the video game industry.

Rockstar’s decision not to give in to hackers’ demands to prevent data disclosure can be justified by the nature of the stolen information. The files published online focused exclusively on the games’ online modules, without revealing crucial details about future projects like GTA VI. Essa Lack of highly sensitive material likely influenced the company’s stance on extortion.

Shark Cards and subscriptions drive revenue

Most of GTA Online’s revenue comes from selling “Shark Cards” calls. Esses cards provide virtual in-game money, allowing players to purchase items, vehicles and properties. As Shark Cards represents a whopping 74% of GTA Online’s average weekly revenue, totaling approximately $7.3 million per week, which translates to approximately $5 billion in total revenue accumulated over the years. Este Monetization model is central to the game’s continued financial success.

The rest of the revenue comes from the GTA+ premium subscription, a service that offers exclusive benefits and monthly rewards to subscribers. In January of this year, GTA+ subscription reached a record of more than 1.3 million paying subscribers. Furthermore, the geographic distribution of profits was also revealed, with Estados Unidos leading the revenue, followed by Reino Unido and Alemanha. Polônia, for example, does not appear among the ten largest markets for the game, demonstrating the concentration of revenue in specific regions.

The data details the following percentage share of Shark Cards and subscriptions in GTA Online’s average weekly revenue:

  • Shark Cards:74% (approximately US$7.3 million)
  • GTA+ Subscription:26% (approximately US$2.3 million)

Revenue and player base by platform

The leaked information also brought clarity about the distribution of GTA Online’s revenue and player base between different platforms. Esses data explains Rockstar Games’s strategy regarding PC releases and its relationship with console manufacturers. The predominance of the PlayStation 5 in the GTA Online scenario is undeniable, representing the largest share of weekly revenue. Outras console platforms, including Xbox, contribute significantly to the game’s overall revenue.

The graph compiled by Derek Strickland, based on the data released, categorically illustrates the division of average weekly revenue by platform. The PC, despite being a vast market for many games, generates only a small fraction of GTA Online’s total. Isso suggests that for Rockstar the PC audience, while publicly valued, has a marginal financial impact in the context of its flagship online title.

The distribution of average weekly revenue by platform is as follows:

  • PlayStation 5:Mais 50%
  • Other consoles (including Xbox):Quase everything else
  • PRAÇA:Apenas US$264,000 (equivalent to 3%)

This distribution is reflected in the active player base, where PlayStation dominates with approximately 63% of GTA Online players. Xbox holds around 25% of the base, while PC accounts for just 10%. The strong connection between Rockstar and Sony, to the detriment of Microsoft, makes sense given these numbers.

Reflections on the developer’s strategy

The data revealed in the leak offers a deeper understanding of Rockstar Games’s priorities and strategies. The discrepancy in revenue between consoles and PC, with the PlayStation 5 alone accounting for more than half of revenue, justifies the company’s approach to releases and content development. It is clear that the PlayStation user base is the main financial driver of GTA Online, which naturally drives investments and partnerships. Essa Marketing reality influences the decision to postpone releases of its PC games, prioritizing console platforms where the return is more substantial.

Despite public statements from executives such as Strauss Zelnick praising the PC market, the leak numbers show that, in practice, this platform continues to be secondary to Rockstar Games in terms of revenue from GTA Online. The company was satisfied with the leak, as more sensitive information about future projects, such as Grand Theft Auto VI, was not compromised. The volume of data stolen was considerably less than could be expected from an attack of such magnitude. The demand for US$200,000 for the information package, as Ben pointed out on X, was considered “crazy” for its disproportionality. Rockstar, in fact, was lucky that the exposed content only focused on existing game operation data, without impacting the future of the studio in a significant way.
