Cooper Flagg beats Kon Knueppel to win NBA Rookie of the Year award

Cooper Flagg of Dallas Mavericks was named the NBA’s Novato of Ano on Monday night. The 19-year-old winger beat Kon Knueppel’s Charlotte Hornets in one of the most competitive votes in the award’s history.

Flagg became the first rookie since Michael Jordan in the 1984-85 season to lead his team in points, rebounds, assists and steals. The two players, former teammates of Duke, took first and second place in the race for the trophy. VJ Edgecombe, from the Philadelphia 76ers, completed the podium.

Flagg dominates Mavericks statistics despite bad season

Knueppel shines on Charlotte and leads in three-pointers

Kon Knueppel, who turned 20 before the start of the season, led the league in three-pointers made with 273. Ele averaged 18.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists while shooting 42.5% from three.

The point guard helped Charlotte reach 44 victories. The team was eliminated by Orlando in the final round of the play-in. Knueppel joined a select group of newcomers alongside Larry Bird and Paul Pierce.

Ex – Duke’s teammates maintain friendly rivalry

Flagg and Knueppel shared a room at the university. Eles kept in touch throughout the season and admitted to following each other’s stats. Flagg described Knueppel as a brother.

The duo became the first former college teammates to finish first and second in Ano’s Novato honors since UConn’s Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon in 2004-05.

Flagg celebrated the recognition, but highlighted personal growth. Ele said the season required constant adaptation and that it prepared him for the future.
