Philadelphia Phillies fired coach Rob Thomson on Tuesday after the worst start to the season in 28 games since 2002. With a record of 9 wins and 19 losses, the preseason favorite to beat Divisão Leste faced a crisis that led to the departure of the coach who had made four consecutive playoff appearances. Don Mattingly, who will serve as interim coach, takes on the responsibility of turning around a franchise that has lost 11 of its last 12 games.

The move marks an unprecedented moment in baseball. Mattingly will officially work for his son Preston Mattingly, general manager of Phillies, in a father-son combination of manager and director believed to be the first in Major League Baseball history.

Why Thomson got fired now

Thomson had signed a contract extension until 2027 and was expected to lead Phillies to another Série Mundial title. The coach won 355 wins in his career and led the franchise to four consecutive playoff appearances since 2022. Philadelphia had a salary bill of more than US$315 million and had talents like Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner. Apesar’s features, performance has dropped drastically since the start of the season.

Os Phillies were facing a devastating losing streak when the board made the decision. President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski had given Thomson a vote of confidence the week before. The escalation of failure made it untenable to keep the coach in office.

Performances disappointing players

Phillies’s failure goes beyond training. The core players haven’t lived up to it in 2026. Alec Bohm and Kyle Schwarber, both starters, have batting averages below .200. Pitchers were unable to remain competitive:

  • Jesus Luzardo with ERA above 5.00
  • Aaron Nola with ERA above 5.00
  • Andrew Painter with ERA above 5.00
  • Zack Wheeler was the only recent win against Atlanta Braves on Saturday

The franchise also released pitcher Taijuan Walker, in the final year of his $72 million contract, after discarding outfielder Nick Castellanos in February.

Histórico from Thomson to Phillies

Thomson arrived at Philadelphia in 2018 as a technical assistant under the command of Gabe Kapler. Substituiu Joe Girardi in 2022 and immediately led Phillies to that year’s Série Mundial, defeated by Houston Astros in six games. Postseason performance regressed in the following years. The team lost Série to Campeonato in 2023 in seven games and Série Divisional in 2024 and 2025, both in four games.

Thomson became just the fourth manager in MLB history to reach the playoffs in each of the first four full seasons of his career, joining Dave Roberts, Aaron Boone and Mike Matheny. Foi also the third Phillies coach to win consecutive division titles, after Charlie Manuel and Danny Ozark.

Antes of Philadelphia, worked 27 years with New York Yankees, including ten seasons on the first team coaching staff, as bench coach and third base coach. Recebeu the nickname “Topper” in the Yankee organization for his attention to detail.

Mattingly as a replacement and the context of the change

Os Phillies investigated the availability of Alex Cora before choosing Mattingly. Cora was fired from Red Sox in surprising fashion on Saturday after more than seven seasons. Segundo sources ESPN’s Buster Olney, the timing was not right for Cora to take on another role. Cora worked with Dave Dombrowski when he was president of baseball operations for Boston Bruins from 2015-2019.

Mattingly now leads a recovery attempt from Philadelphia until the end of the season. Dusty Wathan, third base coach, was promoted to bench coach to assist with the transition. Thomson is the second coach fired in baseball in 2026, following the departure of Cora and five other coaches from Red Sox on Saturday.

The frustration of an expected season

Os Phillies were supposed to celebrate in 2026. The franchise was about to host Estrelas’s Jogo and its festivities. Instead, the team fell apart in every aspect of the game. The failure contrasts dramatically with the success of previous years under Thomson. Philadelphia hasn’t beaten World Series since 2008 and was on a ten-year streak without reaching the playoffs before Thomson led them in 2022, dubbed “Vermelho October,” which revitalized the fan base and made 90+ win seasons the expected norm.
