Valve details new Steam Controller’s trackpad accuracy against mouse

Valve’s new Steam Controller promises to close a historic gap in the world of PC gamers. Enquanto traditional controls have always been seen as disadvantageous in games that require precise aiming — especially tactical titles like Counter-Strike 2 — the company sought to solve this problem with an innovative combination of trackpad and gyroscopic technology.

The most outstanding feature of the control is precisely this trackpad capability with integrated gyroscope. Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais explains that this functionality allows gamepad players to compete on equal footing with mouse and keyboard users in first-person shooters.

Como trackpad replicates the mouse experience

Valve developed a two-tier system to replicate the way gamers use a mouse and keyboard. The trackpad acts as a high-sensitivity device, allowing quick turns and wide movements when exploring the map. Enquanto that, the gyroscope works as a low-sensitivity device, responsible for fine aiming adjustments — exactly as you would use your wrist when controlling a traditional mouse.

“People think of their laptop trackpads as functional, but you’re not going to play a first- or third-person camera game with it and have a good experience,” Pierre-Loup points out. The new Steam Controller changes that equation. The trackpad’s built-in haptic feedback combined with Grip Sense — a feature that turns gyroscopic aiming on or off as you adjust how you hold the controller — creates a more natural and intuitive experience.

Desenvolvendo muscle memory

Segundo the engineer, this combination allows gamers to develop muscle memory similar to that they have with a mouse. Internal testing of the Valve suggests impressive results: players who practice with the Steam Controller achieve performance much closer to that of a mouse than a conventional controller in competitive titles.

“With a little practice, we believe the trackpad and gyroscope are a great alternative to mouse controls,” comments Pierre-Loup. “Mastering this control scheme and being able to play Counter-Strike or other games that require precise aiming with performance closer to that of a mouse than a controller is really exciting.”

Versatilidade plus FPS

The new Steam Controller isn’t limited to first-person shooters. Griffais highlighted that the hardware is also equipped to handle titles that require many hotkeys — a genre in which traditional keyboards dominate. Jogos 4X like Civilization 7, simulators like Flight Simulator and automation titles like Factorio can be played with satisfactory results using the controller’s radial and touch menus.

The Steam Controller’s left trackpad allows you to configure up to 16 customizable hotkeys. Embora other controllers already support this functionality through the Steam Input, Valve argues that the new controller’s hardware features take the experience to a higher level compared to the competition.
