The end of the 1990s marked the consolidation of strategy games for personal computers. Títulos launched during that period established mechanical foundations used to this day by the technology and digital entertainment industry. The complexity of resource management and tactical shift planning have created a generation of demanding consumers.

The Unfrozen studio has made the game Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era available in early access format for users. The new version of the franchise resumes the tactical elements of the third title in the series, originally released in 1999, without configuring itself as a direct recreation of the old material. The project introduces new factions, procedurally generated maps and a combat system focused on the economy. The developer seeks to attract veteran audiences and new players interested in the medieval fantasy genre. The interface has undergone complete visual updates.

Dinâmica of exploration and combat on hexagonal boards

The main structure of the title divides the user experience into two fundamental stages of continuous gameplay. The first phase involves exploring the scenarios, where the player moves his main hero through different kingdoms to collect building materials and gold. The map houses strategic structures and static enemies that protect specific high-value treasures. Heróis controlled by artificial intelligence also circulate around the environment in search of the same advantages. Essa constant movement requires rigorous spatial planning. Control of territory dictates the pace of economic growth.

Clashes take place in a separate interface, designed in the format of a classic hexagonal board. Army units, made up of creatures such as dragons, fairies and knights, act according to individual attributes of speed and initiative. The hero commander does not engage in direct physical combat against opposing troops on the field. The character remains fixed to the edge of the screen. Dessa secure position, the leader casts spells and applies temporary bonuses to assist allied forces during attack and defense turns. The synergy between the troops defines the winner.

Gestão economic and recruitment of military units

Advancing the campaign requires strict management of the financial and material resources collected during map exploration. The player does not pay ongoing maintenance fees to keep the army active in rounds. Obtaining stronger troops, however, requires high investments in the construction of specific buildings within the controlled cities. Improving already recruited units also consumes part of the kingdom’s economic reserves. Long-term planning prevents military bankruptcy.

Military expansion depends on the urban infrastructure developed by the user throughout the virtual weeks in the game. Building a griffin nest, for example, requires spending 3,250 gold coins, in addition to five units of wood and five of iron. Completing the work allows you to immediately purchase seven creatures for 1,785 coins. The system renews recruitment availability every seven days. Time management becomes a critical factor for survival.

Increasing weekly production capacity requires additional fortification projects at main bases. The first improvement costs 2,500 coins and five units of iron extracted from the mines. The next level requires the same amount of gold and ten units of iron. Enemy heroes operate under the same economic rules and seek to capture the player’s cities to steal daily production. Maintaining solid defense lines prevents territorial losses that could irreversibly compromise the course of the match.

Funcionamento of the system of laws and magical progression

The title incorporates deep management elements that bring the experience closer to games of exploration and extermination of virtual empires. Cities are optimized through a system of municipal laws and a magical progression tree divided into several research stages. Acquiring new abilities for heroes requires meeting specific urban infrastructure requirements. The accumulation of magical knowledge defines power at the end of the game.

The spell mechanics work by building wizard guilds in urban centers controlled by the player. The learning process follows a structured order of mandatory actions:

  • Building the guild unlocks a set of seven random spells at the initial research level.
  • The hero needs to physically visit the city with the guild to learn the spells available in the catalog.
  • Observatório Mágico centralizes spells for all cities and allows you to improve skills using resources.
  • Neutral spells require spending astrology points to manually unlock them in the kingdom control panel.

The dominance of schools of magic changes the tactical conditions of advanced confrontations against larger armies. Feitiços of mass destruction hits all units on the board and requires prior defensive positioning to avoid friendly fire. Out-of-combat support abilities provide extra movement points and activate teleport portals between allied cities. The correct use of magical energy accelerates territorial expansion and facilitates the interception of invaders.

Modos game and community tools

The early access version hits the market with five different game modes for users to test. The main campaign features maps drawn manually by the developers, with specific narrative objectives and missions structured into sequential acts. Single hero mode allows for quick matches against artificial intelligence without the commitment of a long story. The arena system focuses exclusively on direct tactical duels between pre-assembled armies with limited resources.

Procedural map generation guarantees the creation of new scenarios with each new session started outside the official campaign. The studio also included a level editor integrated into the base software from day one. The tool provides the same resources used by the development team to build commercial maps. Players can create personalized campaigns and share content with other users through digital distribution platforms.

The behavior of artificial intelligence demonstrates the ability to adapt to the human player’s strategies during the rounds. Computer-controlled enemies prioritize capturing unprotected resource mines and avoiding direct confrontations against numerically superior armies. Studio Unfrozen confirmed that the early access period will be used to balance factions and correct technical glitches reported by the community. The final version will receive updates based on feedback from early buyers.
