Organização Mundial of Saúde confirmed this Sunday three deaths linked to a possible hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship sailing on Atlântico. One case of the disease was laboratory confirmed, while five others remain under investigation, according to an official statement from the WHO. The vessel MV Hondius was traveling from Argentina towards Cabo Verde when the outbreak was reported.

Detailed Investigações is ongoing and includes additional laboratory testing of suspected cases. The WHO works in coordination with health authorities to identify the source of the outbreak and prevent new transmissions among passengers and crew.

Caracterização and hantavirus transmission

Hantavirus is a viral strain transmitted by rodents, and human contamination occurs mainly through inhalation of airborne particles originating from dried animal feces. Infections generally occur when the virus is carried in the urine, feces or saliva of rodents, as indicated by Centros of Controle and Prevenção of Doenças of Estados Unidos. Embora is rare, transmission can also occur through direct bites or scratches from infected animals.

The disease causes two distinct clinical pictures depending on the viral strain involved. Síndrome Pulmonar by Hantavírus (HPS) begins with fatigue, fever and muscle pain, progressing to headaches, dizziness, chills and abdominal problems. Quando respiratory symptoms develop, the mortality rate reaches approximately 38% of cases, according to CDC data. No Brasil, the disease presents as Síndrome Cardiopulmonar by Hantavírus (SCPH), which can progress to respiratory distress syndrome in more severe cases.

The second severe form is Febre Hemorrágica with Síndrome Renal (HFRS), which mainly affects the kidneys and causes low blood pressure, internal bleeding and acute kidney failure. Este type is more common worldwide and presents greater clinical severity.

Epidemiologia and global cases

Estima 150,000 annual cases of HFRS occur worldwide, mainly in Europa and Ásia. China records more than half of these cases annually, according to Institutos Nacionais’s report from Saúde. The Seoul virus, one of the main strains transmitted by Norwegian rats, is distributed globally, including North American territory.

Dados of Estados Unidos show that between 1993, when hantavirus surveillance began, and 2023, 890 cases were recorded in the country. No Brasil, the scenario is more serious. Entre 1993 and 2024, 2,377 cases of hantavirus were confirmed, with 937 deaths in the period, according to Ministério and Saúde. Brazilian Investigações reveal that 70% of infected patients acquired the virus in rural areas, indicating greater exposure in environments with a significant presence of rodents.

Tratamento and clinical care

Não There is specific treatment for hantavirus infections. Clinical management focuses on symptomatic care. The CDC recommends:

  • Oxigenoterapia for maintaining oxygen levels
  • Ventilação mechanics in advanced respiratory cases
  • Medicamentos antivirals as indicated
  • Diálise in cases of renal impairment

Pacientes with severe symptoms often requires admission to intensive care units. Alguns cases progress to endotracheal intubation and prolonged life support. The duration and intensity of treatment depend on the progression of the disease and the patient’s individual response.

Prevenção is the fundamental element in the fight against hantavirus. The CDC recommends eliminating contact with rodents in homes and workplaces by sealing entry points in basements and attics where animals can access structures. Uso of personal protective equipment is essential when cleaning up rodent feces to prevent inhalation of contaminated air.

Histórico recent human transmission

In February 2025, Betsy Arakawa, wife of the winning actor Oscar Gene Hackman, passed away from hantavirus-related respiratory illness. Investigadores Doctors believe that Arakawa contracted HPS, the most common strain in Estados Unidos, which resulted in his death. Ninhos of rodents and some dead animals were found in outbuildings of the house where she was located.

Registros police officers showed that Arakawa searched the internet for information about flu and covid-19 symptoms in the days before his death, suggesting initial confusion with other respiratory illnesses. Este case highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and awareness about hantavirus in urban and residential settings.

Desafios in cruise environment

Navios cruise ships present unique conditions that may favor the transmission of infectious diseases. Shared Ambientes, proximity between passengers, centralized ventilation systems and greater population concentration create an increased risk scenario. The presence of rodents on vessels is particularly worrying, as it compromises traditional control measures.

The WHO emphasizes that investigations are underway to determine how the virus was introduced onto the MV Hondius ship and what the pattern of spread was among passengers. Maritime Health Autoridades are reinforcing inspection and pest control protocols on vessels to prevent future outbreaks.

Passageiros who were on board the ship during the relevant period are being monitored by health authorities in their home countries. Testes laboratory tests are being performed on individuals who present symptoms compatible with hantavirus infection.

Vigilância and epidemiological response

The response to the outbreak involves coordination between multiple international agencies. WHO, in cooperation with national health agencies from Argentina, Brasil, Cabo Verde and other countries with possible exposure, works to trace contacts and isolate confirmed cases. Laboratórios specialists perform viral confirmation and subtyping tests for epidemiological purposes.

Comunicações were sent to health agencies in ports where the ship docked or is scheduled to dock, alerting health professionals about possible cases. Campanhas information about symptoms and when to seek medical attention was disseminated in affected regions.
