The film “Marty Supreme” premieres on the Prime Video platform this Thursday (May 8). Dirigido by Josh Safdie in his first solo work in almost two decades, the production features Timothée Chalamet in the role of a table tennis player obsessed with getting rich through sport, but constantly diverted from his goal by successive crises that he himself causes. The film was released in theaters on January 30, 2026 and is now streaming with a five-star rating.

Marty Mauser is a compulsive liar who cheats, insults, steals and puts people at risk for his own benefit. Suas’s characteristics place him in the lineage of desperate characters that Safdie has explored in previous films such as “Good Time” (2017) and “Uncut Gems” (2019), co-directed with his brother Benny. The difference here is that, despite being despicable in many aspects, the anti-hero gains a human dimension through the interpretation of Chalamet, who gives the character overflowing energy and charisma that is impossible to ignore.

Caos controlled in two and a half hours

The narrative works like a ping-pong ball ricocheting between crises. Cada temporary solution triggers new problem, which in turn generates another emergency when neutralized. Marty’s journey accumulates disparate events: a gangster, a dog, car accident, home invasion, shooting, fire, building collapse and several chases in a continuous sequence.

Safdie’s direction amplifies this frenzy through specific formal resources:

  • Câmera frantic that exaggerates the actors’ movements
  • Diálogos fired at maximum volume without pauses
  • Edição ignoring rest moments
  • Reviravoltas plots that take sudden and unexpected turns
  • Protagonista staggering like a runaway train across rooftops, fire escapes and under bullets

The pacing never allows the spectator to catch their breath. Chalamet walks through the chaos with vulnerability disguised as arrogance, seducing both the audience and the characters he meets on his way.

Metáfora politics of competitive sport

A decisive match pits Jewish player Marty against a Japanese opponent in a confrontation that transcends table tennis. Ambos seek victory to atone for the horrors of war, transforming the dispute into an arena for reflections on American exceptionalism and the dark side of Sonho Americano. The soundtrack uses 1980s anthems despite the narrative being meticulously set in the 1950s, reinforcing that the film’s observations on obsession and ambition resonate across time.

Intérprete balances villainy and seduction

Timothée Chalamet performs interpretation that inverts moral expectations. The film fully recognizes that Marty, under normal circumstances, would be a despicable character. Contudo, Chalamet’s performance with boundless energy, substantial charisma, and precise blend of arrogance and vulnerability makes it impossible not to root for him. Safdie gradually builds tension until, after going through a world of crises, the young man finally shows signs of transforming into a mature man. Ainda So, the question remains whether this development is genuine or just another one of their mistakes.

Elenco adds protagonism

The film reunites Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion and Kevin O’Leary in supporting roles. The 2025 production remained on the cinematic circuit for more than three months before its arrival at Prime Video, indicating positive reception from critics and audiences in theaters.
