The Ypê factory in Amparo, São Paulo, had a production line closed after inspectors identified for the second time the presence of bacteria in cleaning products. Agência Nacional of Vigilância Sanitária (Anvisa) and Centro of Vigilância Sanitária (CVS) found significant hygiene failures and the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria in recently collected samples. The decision to suspend production occurred because the company was unable to consistently resolve the issue, which was originally detected in November last year.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common pathogen in hospital infections, mainly affecting the lungs, especially in patients with cystic fibrosis or compromised immunity. Embora is not highly contagious, it poses a risk to vulnerable groups. The closed line has an annual capacity to manufacture 23 thousand tons of detergent and 33 thousand tons of washing liquid, significantly impacting the company’s production.

Falhas structural and hygiene identified in the inspection

Manoel Lara, director of Centro of Vigilância Sanitária of São Paulo, detailed the deficiencies found during the inspection. Inspectors found widespread accumulation of dirt in the production environment, including residue on the floor, pipes and machines used in the manufacturing process. Essa dirt highlights significant flaws in the industrial unit’s cleaning procedures, creating an environment conducive to the proliferation of microorganisms.

Inadequacies in good product processing practices can be directly associated with bacterial contamination. Além of direct hygiene problems, inspectors identified deficiencies in documentary aspects related to manufacturing procedures. The presence of dust and residue indicates that minimum hygiene standards were not being continuously maintained in the facilities.

Investigação points out possible water contamination

The exact origin of the bacteria in the products has not yet been determined with certainty by health authorities. CVS is actively investigating the possibility that a break in the sewage drainage structure contaminated the water reservoir used to manufacture the products. If confirmed, this hypothesis suggests a serious failure in the factory’s basic infrastructure, prior to the production process itself.

The investigation seeks to elucidate whether the primary cause lies in the quality of the water supplied, in the hygiene processes used by the company or in aspects related to the handling of inputs and products by employees. The analysis of all these variables is essential to identify and permanently correct the source of contamination.

Retenção of affected products and period

Anvisa ordered the retention of contaminated products and the closure of the facilities in the specific sector of the factory. The measure covers units filled over a period of six months, between April and September 2025. Outros batches produced after the initial period were retained at the factory for additional analysis, following the intervention of Anvisa in November.

Outras production lines in the same factory as Amparo, in addition to units in other regions of Brasil, were not subject to fines by the authorities. The infraction notice was drawn up by the city hall of Amparo, in coordination with the state and federal spheres. The company has a period of ten days to file an appeal against the health surveillance decision.

Requisitos for suspension rollback

Para suspension is reversed, Ypê must meet a series of specific requirements and present a comprehensive action plan. Requirements include:

  • Realização of detailed investigation of the possible causes of bacterial contamination.
  • Identificação is accurate if the problem lies in the quality of the water, the hygiene process or the handling of the products.
  • Apresentação of a plan that evaluates all aspects, from water treatment to compliance with health legislation.
  • Implementação of updated good manufacturing practices and ongoing staff training.
  • Indicação clear of proposed solutions for each failure identified during inspections.

Enquanto If the company fails to resolve these fundamental issues and demonstrate compliance with the required requirements, it will not be permitted to produce the affected product types on the banned line. The interruption will remain until the safety and hygiene of the processes are fully restored and proven by the authorities.

Company Posicionamento and next steps

Ypê expressed confidence in the ability to reverse the suspension of production at its factory. The company claims to have “robust scientific foundations”, supported by independent tests and technical reports that attest to the safety of its products in the dishwasher, concentrated dishwasher, liquid washing machine and disinfectant categories. Segundo the company, products do not pose any risk to consumers.

Ypê mentioned that it maintains “continuous and collaborative dialogue” with Anvisa, seeking a solution to the situation. The company expressed full confidence that, by presenting additional information and technical evidence to regulatory authorities, it will achieve a reversal of the ban decision in the shortest possible time. The company’s commitment to the quality and safety of its products continues to be reinforced.
