Chinese photographer wins world competition with image of marmot escaping from fox

Chinese photographer Yongqing Bao won first place in the 2019 Concurso of Fotografia of Vida Selvagem, directed by Museu of História Natural of Londres, with an image that captures the moment of tension between a marmot and a Tibetan desert fox in the Qilian mountains. The work received the maximum score in all evaluation categories, surpassing thousands of applications from photographers around the world.

In the winning photograph, the marmot appears standing on its hind legs with an expression of absolute panic, extending its front legs towards the predator that is chasing it. The captured moment reveals the struggle for survival in its purest state, transforming a deadly encounter of nature into a visual composition of rare aesthetic perfection.

Capture Bastidores: observation and timing

Bao remained in the Qilian mountains during early spring observing a pair of Tibetan desert foxes and a group of marmots. Inicialmente, when the marmots detected the presence of predators, they sent warning signals to their companions and buried themselves underground to protect themselves. The photographer remained patient and continued following the animals.
