Polska Agencja Kosmiczna (POLSA) is closely following the return to the atmosphere of a Russian module that will cross European skies between May 16th and 17th. The fragment, known as Fregat R/B (NORAD designation: 68537), was launched in March 2026 from the Plesiecsk cosmodrome, at Rússia, and has approximately one ton of mass. Polish Autoridades warn that the object’s trajectory could pass directly over the national territory, according to an official statement released this Thursday.

The module is part of the upper stage of the Sojuz-2.1b rocket, responsible for boosting 16 satellites from the Rasswet constellation to low Earth orbit. The mission took off without prior notice from Russian space agencies, an unusual pattern for launches of this type. Especialistas indicate that the equipment was designed to provide internet connectivity and represents Moscou’s response to SpaceX’s Starlink satellites, controlled by billionaire Elon Musk.

Janela critical reentry and geographic location

The period of greatest risk occurs between 8:43 am on May 16th and 1:49 pm on the 17th (Brasília time). The Polish agency specified that, based on Fregat’s current orbital configuration, the fall trajectory could cross European territory, specifically including Polish airspace. The object’s orbit places multiple countries in the potential path of impact.

Preliminary Cálculos indicates that Fregat R/B reenters a range of about 26 hours, during which minute variations in altitude and speed can significantly alter the exact point of fall. Computational Modelos continues to be refined as new tracking data reaches international monitoring centers.

Fragment Survival Possibilidade

A central concern concerns the module structure. The Fregat consists of multiple cylindrical segments containing fuel and attitude control systems, components traditionally resistant to heat generated during atmospheric reentry. Dado the approximate weight of a thousand kilograms and the lack of complete public information about internal materials, POLSA engineers do not rule out a scenario where significant parts pass through the upper layers of the atmosphere.

Históricos from similar reentries shows that rockets of this class often produce residual fragments. In 2021, parts of a Chinese Long March rocket fell into the ocean Índico without causing damage. Contudo, survival of rocket components poses potential risk to people and infrastructure if the crash occurs over a population zone.

Informações monitoring techniques include:

  • Estimated Massa: approximately 1 ton
  • Expected re-entry Período: May 16-17 (08:43 to 13:49 Polish time)
  • Origem: March 23, 2026 launch, Plesiecsk cosmodrome
  • Designação technical: Fregat R/B (NORAD 68537, COSPAR 2026-061S)
  • Initial Órbita: approximately 300 kilometers altitude
  • Carga carried: 16 Rasswet satellites for internet connectivity

Procedimentos official monitoring and communication

POLSA confirmed that all relevant institutions and Polish air defense agencies receive continuous updates on the object’s trajectory. Standard Procedimentos were activated, involving coordination with civil aviation authorities and military entities responsible for national airspace.

The agency appealed to the public to rely exclusively on official statements and ignore speculation on social media or unverified sources. Desinformação over space reentries may generate unnecessary panic or interfere with response operations.

Geopolitical Contexto and response to Starlink

The launch of Rasswet marks the intensification of space competition between Rússia and Estados Unidos in the satellite constellation segment. SpaceX’s Starlink constellation, controlled by Elon Musk, already has thousands of units in orbit, largely dominating the satellite Internet market. The Russian program represents an attempt to reduce external technological dependence and provide an alternative to users in regions where Starlink does not operate.

Paradoxalmente, the failure or loss of the rocket support undermines Russian objectives of establishing a comparable presence. Available Dados indicate that the launch took place without a formal public statement from Roskosmos or Ministério from Russian Defesa, unlike transparent procedures observed in previous missions.
