Russian President Vladimir Putin praised a new test of the RS-28 Sarmat, an intercontinental ballistic missile considered one of the most powerful weapons in the Russian nuclear arsenal. The launch took place days after Putin declared that the war on Ucrânia was nearing an end. Segundo authorities of Moscou, the system will enter combat service by December this year.

Putin described the weapon as “the most powerful missile in the world” during a speech on Tuesday (12). Colonel General Sergei Karakayev, a member of the Russian military command, followed the test. According to the president, the combined power of the Sarmat warheads exceeds that of equivalent Western models by more than four times.

Especificações techniques and capabilities

The RS-28 Sarmat began development in 2011 as part of the strategic modernization of Russian nuclear forces. The system was designed to replace the Voyevoda, a missile of Soviet origin used during the Guerra Fria. Seu design allows it to hit multiple targets in a single operation and bypass modern missile defense systems.

Centro of Estudos Estratégicos and Internacionais (CSIS), an institution based in Washington, has released the dimensions of Sarmat:

  • Comprimento: 35.3 meters
  • Diâmetro: 3 meters
  • Peso exceeding 208 tons
  • Capacidade payload up to 10 tons
  • Alcance declared: more than 35 thousand kilometers
  • Quantidade of nuclear warheads: 10 or more

The Russian government claims the missile can execute ballistic and suborbital trajectories. In practice, this means that the weapon would reach space before re-entering the atmosphere towards the target. Tal capability would significantly expand the possibility of evading existing missile defense systems. Moscou is located approximately 7,500 kilometers from Nova York.

Western Perspectiva on the real range

Russian Autoridades designate Sarmat as “unstoppable”. Putin has already stated that the system would surpass any defense mechanism currently available in Ocidente. Contudo, Western analysts consulted by the agency Al Jazeera estimate that the real range of the Sarmat is closer to more than 18 thousand kilometers. Apesar Despite this discrepancy, these experts agree that the missile would have enough capacity to reach practically any location on the planet.

The system was developed with the aim of representing technological advancement in nuclear deterrence. The possibility of carrying multiple warheads and executing complex maneuvers during the flight constitutes a differentiating feature compared to international competitors. Isso would explain Putin’s tone in describing the weaponry as superior to Western equivalents in terms of combined power.

Nuclear Implementation and Modernization Cronograma

The Russian government has established that the RS-28 Sarmat will enter into full operation by the end of 2026. Essa forecast is part of the broader plan to modernize the country’s nuclear forces. Moscou has been carrying out successive tests of the system to validate its operational capabilities before formal implementation.

Rússia intensified its investments in nuclear weaponry following the Ucrânia invasion. Putin used nuclear threats repeatedly during the conflict, raising tensions with Western powers. The announcement about Sarmat occurred at a time of rhetorical escalation, when the Russian president simultaneously signaled the possibility of ending hostilities against Kiev.

Contexto geopolitical and strategic deterrence

The development of the Sarmat reflects continued competition between Rússia and Ocidente in the strategic weaponry domain. Estados Unidos and European allies constantly monitor Russian advances in nuclear technology. The Russian system represents an attempt by Moscou to maintain dissuasive parity in a scenario of possible direct confrontation.

The ten-ton warhead holds multiple independent rockets, allowing each one to hit a different target. Essa configuration makes the system particularly challenging for anti-missile defenses, which would need to neutralize multiple threats simultaneously. Western Especialistas recognize that this capability represents a qualitative leap compared to previous generations of Russian missiles.

Putin often uses displays of military power as a tool of diplomacy and intimidation. The Sarmat test, amplified by state media coverage, communicates a message aimed at both domestic audiences and Western powers. The timing of the announcement, close to the declarations about ending the Ukrainian war, suggests Moscou’s strategic calculation in potential negotiations.

Rússia has invested billions in nuclear modernization programs since the 2000s. The Sarmat represents the culmination of decades of research and development. Moscou presents the system as evidence that it maintains technological capabilities comparable to leading global competitors despite international economic sanctions.
