Sunset lines up with Manhattan streets on four dates in 2026

Dois distinct periods will mark the calendar of skywatchers in Nova York in 2026. Entre on May 28th and 29th, and again on July 11th and 12th, the sunset will perfectly align with the layout of the cross streets of Manhattan, creating a spectacle known as Manhattanhenge.

The phenomenon occurs because Manhattan’s urban grid was built with a tilt of 30 degrees east of true north, as established in Comissários’s Plano of 1811. Essa’s unique geometry means that only on specific dates other than the June solstice does sunset reach the 300-degree azimuth, or 30 degrees north of west, necessary to align with the streets that bisect the city.

Melhores observation points on Manhattan

The streets with the best visibility for the event are the widest streets, where you can see the horizon towards Nova Jersey without obstructions. Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of Planetário Hayden, especially recommends:

  • Rua 14 — clear view to the west
  • Rua 23 — alignment with the coastal horizon
  • Rua 34 — Empire State Building’s stunning frame
  • Rua 42 — Chrysler Building’s dramatic perspective
  • Rua 57 — least congested spot for photography

Observation times vary slightly over the weeks. On May 28, the “half sun” (half above, half below the horizon) will appear at 8:14 p.m. The following night, May 29, “full sun” will be visible at 8:13 p.m. In July, the calendar reverses: July 11th brings full sun at 8:20 pm, while July 12th offers half sun at 8:21 pm.

The scientific explanation behind the alignment

The phenomenon involves seasonal variation in the position of the sunset on the horizon. Durante the year, the sunset azimuth is not fixed. Entre the March and September equinoxes, the sun sets progressively further north of the west, reaching its maximum point in the north on the June solstice (azimuth of 302 degrees), then returning to the south. The geometric coincidence between Manhattan’s tilted urban grid and the solar path occurs in two windows: at the end of May, when the sun moves north, and at the beginning of July, when it migrates back south.

Para For the visual effect to be noticeable, the sunset seen from street level needs to have an altitude of approximately one degree above the actual horizon, taking into account hills and structures in the background in Nova Jersey. Essa difference between the theoretical astronomical horizon and the actual topographic horizon is crucial for the exact synchronization of dates.

Preparação and practical guidance

Especialistas suggest arriving at observation sites at least 30 minutes in advance of the expected sunset time. 34th and 42nd streets tend to attract larger crowds, so those looking for privacy or a better position for photographs should consider alternative streets, such as 14th, 23rd and 57th.

The camera lucida of New Yorkers and tourists from around the world have been awaiting this phenomenon for almost three decades. The event became popular globally, even appearing in television productions such as a 2009 episode of “CSI: NY” and in clips from the series “Younger” on the TV channel Land, consolidating Manhattanhenge as an urban cultural brand.

Manhattanhenge at sunrise also exists

Nem everyone knows that the alignment also occurs at dawn, but on very different dates. Quem wants to watch the sunrise align with the streets of Manhattan will have opportunities between December 9, 2026 and January 2, 2027. The sun will rise between 120 and 30 degrees south of east, creating the reverse effect of the sunset. Contudo, wintry environmental conditions including temperatures 30 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit lower and greater likelihood of local obstructions due to the vertical density of Harém, Bronx, and Queens make these observations more challenging than nighttime observations.
