Universidade Harvard approved this Wednesday, May 20, a measure that limits the number of students eligible to receive the maximum grade A (equivalent to 10) in courses. The decision seeks to restore what the institution considers as the integrity of the evaluation system, which had lost credibility with grade inflation in recent years.

The new criteria establishes a ceiling on the percentage of students per class who can achieve the highest classification. Essa restriction mainly affects undergraduate programs, where concentration of top grades had become increasingly common, making it difficult to differentiate between exceptional and satisfactory performances.

Contexto of grade inflation in Harvard

Dados from the last five years shows that around 50% of undergraduate students received A grades in at least one course, a level considered unsustainable by academic administration. The rising proportion reflected a broader trend at elite American universities, where the grading system has lost its original discriminatory function.

Harvard faced internal and external criticism about the system’s credibility. Empregadores and graduate programs reported difficulty evaluating applicants when virtually all had high grades on their transcripts. Essa reality also affected students’ self-assessment and the quality of feedback provided by teachers.

The university conducted consultations with faculty, departmental leaders, and student representatives throughout 2024 to formulate an approach that balanced academic demand with practical feasibility.

Como the new policy will work

Implementation will occur in phases, starting in the second academic semester of 2025. Adjustments include:

  • Estabelecimento maximum limit of 12% of students per class with grade A
  • Criação of clear guidelines for teachers on differentiated assessment criteria
  • Revisão of performance rubrics in departments
  • Implementação quarterly monitoring system for the distribution of notes
  • Treinamento specific for teachers on assessment calibration

Teachers will maintain autonomy to determine who deserves high grades within the allowed percentage, avoiding rigid quotas that could compromise the quality of the assessment.

Reações and future prospects

Associação of Alunos of Harvard requested clarification on how the policy will affect scholarship applications and competitive programs. The university has confirmed it will work with funding bodies to ensure the change does not harm student opportunities.

Especialistas in higher education point out that this decision could serve as a precedent. Outras institutions like Yale, Princeton and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) face similar dilemmas, although none have implemented such explicit restrictions to date.

The measure reflects growing tension in the American higher education system between global standardization of assessments and competitive differentiation. Leading-edge Universidades seek to regain external credibility without compromising talent attraction or quality of the student experience.
