Cientistas from the universities of Toronto and Ottawa directly measured the release of white hydrogen in ancient rocks from Escudo Canadense. The study identified continuous flow of gas in wells of an operating mine. The results were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The geological formation is home to some of the oldest rocks on the planet. Pesquisadores followed the accumulation and release of gas for a long period. The recorded volume suggests potential for use as a source of clean energy.

Direct Medição reveals sustainable hydrogen flow

Equipes collected samples from 35 drilling wells in a mine near Timmins, in Ontário. Cada well released an average of 0.008 tons of hydrogen per year. Isso is equivalent to around eight kilos, the approximate weight of a common car battery.

Gas has continued to come out stably for more than ten years. Barbara Sherwood Lollar, teacher of Universidade of Toronto and lead author, led the work together with Oliver Warr, of Universidade of Ottawa. The analysis confirmed that hydrogen naturally accumulates at depth.

  • Poços analyzed up to 2.9 kilometers deep
  • Liberação average of 8 kilos per well per year
  • Potencial flow maintained for a decade or more
  • Rochas dates back billions of years

Essa was the first direct, long-term measurement of white hydrogen in ancient continental formation. Até then, the topic was mainly of interest to microbiologists who study underground life.

Como white hydrogen forms in rocks

Reações chemicals between water and iron-rich minerals generate the gas at depth. The process occurs without human intervention. Diferente of green hydrogen, does not require electricity from renewable sources for production.

Escudo Canadense covers about half of Canada. Ele contains rocks from the Precambrian period. Essas structures also host deposits of nickel, copper and diamonds. Proximity to existing mines can reduce infrastructure costs for future extraction.

The study mapped concentrations of the gas and tracked its accumulation over time. Resultados indicate that the phenomenon is not punctual. Ele may be repeated in other areas with similar rock composition.

Vantagens economic and environmental natural resource

White hydrogen arises directly from the Earth’s crust. Therefore, its cost tends to be lower than that of industrially produced versions. Ele is already used today in the manufacture of ammonia for fertilizers, in petroleum refining and in the steel industry.

Larger-scale adoption could reduce emissions in sectors that are difficult to decarbonize. Países with ancient geological formations, like Canadá, gain a domestic energy option. Isso reduces dependence on imports of fossil fuels.

Sherwood Lollar highlighted that the resource offers the opportunity for affordable, locally generated power. The research paves the way for wider exploration of natural hydrogen in different parts of the world.

Potencial application in mines and local communities

Muitas Canadian mines are installed exactly on rocks of Escudo. Essa overlap facilitates possible gas utilization. The released hydrogen could supply part of the energy demand of its own operations or nearby regions.

Preliminary Cálculos at a single location point to tens of tons annually when extrapolated to all mine shafts. The energy equivalent reaches millions of kilowatt-hours per year. The volume could power hundreds of homes.

Ainda advances in capture technology and secure storage are needed. Especialistas evaluate economic viability in different scenarios. The study of Toronto and Ottawa provides concrete data for these analyses.

Contexto global search for natural hydrogen

Diversos countries have started prospecting for geological hydrogen in recent years. Previous Descobertas occurred in Austrália, Estados Unidos, França and Mali. The Canadá now contributes accurate measurements on very old rocks.

White hydrogen is also called golden or geological hydrogen. Ele adds to the low-carbon options for the energy transition. Diferente of intermittent renewable sources, the underground flow tends to be more constant.

The research published on May 18, 2026 reinforces scientific interest in the topic. Equipes continue to map similar formations on other continents. The objective is to better understand the real potential of the resource.
