Sergei Krikalev took off on May 19, 1991 towards the Mir space station. The experienced flight engineer joined Soyuz TM-12 at a critical time — União Soviética was facing profound political instability that no one could accurately predict. Seu’s return was expected within weeks. Voltaria months later, finding a country that no longer existed on the map.

Krikalev’s initial stay at Mir would follow the conventional schedule of space missions of that period. In July 1991, however, the cosmonaut agreed to extend his stay. The reason: operational adjustments to the launch schedule reduced two planned flights to just a single rescue flight, forcing the engineer to wait for October to receive the next crew that would pick him up.

Enquanto the space worked, Terra disappeared

Krikalev continued its experiments and technical maintenance in orbit. Na Terra, the situation was deteriorating rapidly. União Soviética was entering the process of irreversible dissolution. Ground support for the space program collapsed in a bureaucratic and financial impasse that froze resources, paralyzed projects and left cosmonauts and astronauts stranded between nations.

Krikalev’s isolation in space deepened every day. Communications continued, food arrived via refueling capsules, but geopolitical reality transformed as he orbited at an altitude of 400 kilometers.

Missões that were supposed to occur were cancelled. Outras have been postponed indefinitely. Krikalev remained at Mir, carrying out his work with professionalism, without knowing when exactly he would return or which country he would return to — a question that no one could answer with certainty in that chaos.

The impossible return to a country that no longer existed

The saga ended only on March 25, 1992. Depois 311 days in orbit, Krikalev finally returned to Terra. Sua capsule Soyuz played solo on Cazaquistão. But when he opened his eyes and breathed earthly air, the nation that had sent him into space had ceased to exist.

União Soviética officially disbanded on December 26, 1991. Krikalev technically became a stateless cosmonaut—sent by a state that disappeared while he slept in microgravity. The nickname “the forgotten cosmonaut” caught on in the international media, capturing the strangeness of his situation.

The financing for his return came in an unusual way: Alemanha paid US$24 million to Rússia to send the Klaus-Dietrich pilot Flade in the same capsule that would fetch Krikalev. Flade returned with the Soviet cosmonaut, making Krikalev an even more “countryless” citizen alongside a West German who had literally bought his ticket back.

Reconhecimento and extraordinary legacy

Apesar of all things, Krikalev has been honored for its resilience during the most unstable geopolitical transition in space history. Recebeu took the title of Herói from Rússia and already held the distinction of Herói from União Soviética — a contradiction of honors that perfectly sums up his story.

Sua career in space continued. Acumulou over one year and five months of combined experience on various missions. Participou of historic moments:

  • Primeiro module of Estação Espacial Internacional (ISS) — assembly that marked cooperation between rival superpowers
  • Primeira joint space shuttle mission between Estados Unidos and Rússia
  • Múltiplas dispatches to Mir during the period of operation
  • Treinamento of later generations of cosmonauts

Krikalev credited the success of his mission not to geopolitical fluke, but to colleagues and mission control teams at Terra. Sua’s perspective reflected reality: although trapped involuntarily in a science fiction scenario, it was human competence—not politics—that brought him back alive.

The story of Krikalev remains unique in astronautics. Não was a technical problem or mechanical failure that kept it in space. Foi to História in its greatest sense — the collapse of a superpower captured by the trajectory of a man in orbit who, upon returning, found the world transformed.
