Suicide bomb attack on train kills 23 people in Quetta, Pakistan

A suicide bomb attack on a moving train near a station in Quetta, southwest of Paquistão, on the 24th left at least 23 dead and 71 injured. Police are investigating the incident, believing someone intentionally set off the bomb. Exército of Libertação of Baluchistão (BLA), an anti-government separatist organization that demands independence from the central government, claimed responsibility for the attack.

A man who witnessed the explosion told Reuters that he was close to the train tracks at the time of the attack. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, he stated that “such a despicable terrorist act will not shake the resolve of the Pakistani people.” Interior’s minister, Mohsin Naqbi, traveled to Quetta and met with the governor of Baluchistão’s province to assess the situation.

Contexto of separatist violence

Baluchistão is a region rich in oil and mineral resources, historically plagued by violence from separatist groups. The BLA has already claimed responsibility for multiple large-scale explosions and suicide bombings in the area. In February, a suicide bombing and shooting claimed by the BLA left at least 33 people dead, as confirmed by the Pakistani military. The region continues to be a focus of political tensions and armed conflicts that seek greater autonomy from the federal government.
