Tommy Elphick ruled out the possibility of becoming Bristol City’s coach. The former Brighton defender, aged 38, informed the board that he prefers to remain at Bournemouth as part of Marco Rose’s technical committee. Elphick has been an assistant coach at the Vitality Stadium club since 2021, during which time he played 145 matches for the Cherries team.
Bristol City had moved forward in hiring Elphick after initially focusing on Michael Skubala, Lincoln City’s coach. Contudo, Lincoln refused to release the coach and triggered the contract clause. Skubala, awarded best coach over League One by LMA on Tuesday, signed a new contract with Sincil Bank and remains in charge of Imps.
Disputa by successor of Hodgson extends
Roy Hodgson stepped down as interim head coach of Bristol City after leading them to 12th place in Championship. The team was 11 points away from sixth place, the playoff access zone. The board is still looking for a replacement to occupy the bench permanently.
John Mousinho, Portsmouth’s technician, was also considered for the position. The Robins board evaluated multiple options before choosing Elphick, a former Aston Villa defender with extensive experience in defense.
Novo challenge for James Ellis
James Ellis, hired as sports director of Bristol City, came from Arsenal, where he held the role of technical director. Agora, Ellis face pressure to find a coach who can establish a consistent project within the squad and rescue competitive performance in the English elite division.
The delay in defining the technician occurs while the market is moving. Bristol City will compete next season needing stability and clear leadership after the transition period with Hodgson.
Carreira from Elphick as a player
Elphick, born in 1986, built a respectable career trajectory as a defender:
- Brighton Hove and Albion
- Bournemouth (145 matches)
- Aston Villa
- Reading
- Hull City
- Huddersfield Town
Seu’s competitive background as a defender, who played for 6 professional clubs, was attractive to Bristol City, who was looking for someone with leadership experience in the locker room. Elphick’s refusal makes it clear that his priority is to consolidate the technical function in Bournemouth under Marco Rose.
