Corpus Christi will be celebrated this Thursday (June 4). The date is included in the federal calendar as a national optional point. Estados and municipalities decide whether to transform the celebration into a local holiday through specific law.

The distinction directly affects millions of workers. In cities where the date becomes a holiday, time off becomes mandatory, with clear compensation rules for those who work. Já in the optional position, the employer has the autonomy to maintain normal working hours.

Regras vary depending on municipal or state law

Muitos municipalities adopted Corpus Christi as a religious holiday. The list includes capitals such as São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Salvador and Goiânia. Nessas locations, companies must lay off employees, with exceptions in essential services.

Outras capitals treat the date only as an optional point. Working hours continue as normal, but federal and some state public bodies release employees. Workers in the private sector depend on the company’s internal policy or collective agreement.

  • São Paulo declares municipal holiday
  • Rio of Janeiro adopts optional point
  • Brasília includes the date in the calendar of federal employees
  • Curitiba recognizes as local holiday

The variation requires prior consultation. The ideal is to check the city hall decree or sector rules before planning the amendment.

Direitos of worker scheduled for the day

The boss can summon the employee even where the date is a holiday. The legislation makes exceptions for essential activities, such as transport, health, security and funeral services. Convenções collectives also allow work by prior arrangement.

Quem acts receives compensation. The most common option is to pay double the hours worked. Outra alternative is to take another day off, with a 100% increase over the normal working day.

Advogados workers consulted by the press reinforce that extra remuneration or compensatory rest must be clearly stated. Non-compliance opens the way for complaints in Justiça of Trabalho.

Emenda can reach four days in a row

The date falls on a Thursday. With the sixth (5) as a possible optional point in several places, the rest extends. Quem off on Saturday and Sunday can add up to four days off work.

The calendar looks like this this week:

  • June 4 (Thursday): Corpus Christi
  • June 5th (Friday): optional in many places
  • June 6th (Saturday): regular day off for those who don’t work weekends
  • June 7th (Sunday): regular day off

The combination encourages those who can line up the gaps. But those who remain on a normal scale must confirm payment or compensation.

Essential Setores keeps running

Mesmo on holidays, some activities don’t stop. Hospitais, police, firefighters, public transport and continuous process industries continue to operate. The law considers these services essential for the population.

Nessas situations, the worker is guaranteed double pay or later time off. The employer needs to organize shifts in advance and respect the working hours limits set out in the CLT.

Article 70 of Consolidação of Leis of Trabalho prohibits work on national holidays, but allows exceptions via agreement or for essential services. Corpus Christi, as it is not a fixed federal holiday, follows local logic.
