Real Madrid announced this Tuesday the departure of Álvaro Arbeloa from the technical command of the first team. The former full-back, who took office in January, will not remain at the club next season.
The club issued an official statement confirming the amicable agreement to end the relationship. Arbeloa, trained in Real Madrid’s youth categories, is described by the board as an example of Merengues values, with emphasis on loyalty, commitment and professionalism.
His time at the bank lasted around five months. Arbeloa took over after the departure of Xabi Alonso and led the team in 28 games, with 18 wins, two defeats and eight draws. The team finished La Liga in second place, with 86 points, eight behind champions Barcelona, and was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Without titles this season, the team was under constant pressure. Arbeloa confirmed his departure at a press conference before the last game, against Athletic Club, and declared his gratitude to the players, who, according to him, made him grow as a coach.
Home route
Arbeloa arrived at Real Madrid at a young age and built a career as a right-back, winning two Champions Leagues with the first team. As a coach, he worked for the youth teams before making the jump to the professional ranks in a time of transition.
The club reinforced that the Santiago Bernabéu will always be their home and wished the coach and his family success in the new phase. The statement highlights the gratitude for the dedication throughout the years of the relationship.
Open future
With the departure confirmed, Real Madrid begins planning for the next cycle. Speculation points to the possible return of José Mourinho, although Arbeloa has ruled out joining the Portuguese’s coaching staff.
The decision marks the end of a short but intense cycle for a symbol of the White House who is now seeking new challenges in football.
