Instagram has started releasing a feature called Friend Map, which allows you to view the location of friends directly in the app. The functionality, tested since 2024, appears at the top of the message box and shows where selected contacts are currently.

The tool replicates features of Snap Map, Snapchat, and also Find My, from Apple. Users can see the approximate position of friends who have chosen to share, with the ability to add short notes to indicate what they are doing or enjoying there.

Meta reinforced that sharing is completely optional and is disabled by default. Those who activate can choose between personalized lists, Close Friends or followers who also follow back. There is also Ghost Mode, which hides the location whenever desired.

How privacy works on Friend Map

The feature has end-to-end encryption to protect location data. The company states that the position is only displayed for the chosen group and can be stopped at any time. Even so, the launch has sparked debate about privacy risks, especially among users who fear automatic settings or unintentional sharing.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, published clarifications highlighting that location is not activated without explicit consent and that stories with location tags only appear on the map for 24 hours for followers.

Expansion and comparison with rivals

Friend Map debuted in the United States in August 2025 and has been expanded to other countries, including India. In Brazil, there is still no confirmed date for full arrival, but tests and gradual releases are already taking place.

Unlike older tools, the Instagram map integrates better with the Meta ecosystem, allowing you to discover content posted by friends in nearby locations. This combines real-time location with the consumption of Reels, Stories and posts.

What changes for users

For those who like to arrange plans with friends or keep track of where the group is, the new feature makes it easier to meet spontaneously. At the same time, it reinforces the need to check privacy settings frequently, as social media apps accumulate more and more geolocation data.

The launch is part of a series of updates that include reposts in the feed and the Friends tab on Reels, all with a focus on more direct connections between users.
