Apple unveils redesigned Siri AI and iOS 27 support for older iPhones at WWDC 2026 keynote

Apple used its annual developers conference to present a comprehensive overhaul of Siri and announce extended software support for older iPhone models. The WWDC 2026 keynote held special significance as CEO Tim Cook’s final appearance before John Ternus assumes leadership in September. The company centered its presentation on artificial intelligence integration across its entire device ecosystem, including iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple Watch and Vision Pro.

Software updates dominated the announcement slate. Apple Intelligence and a rebuilt Siri formed the foundation of the presentation, alongside iOS 27 compatibility for iPhone 11 and newer models. The company also introduced enhanced child safety tools, performance improvements and smarter functionality throughout core applications. Updates ranged from major system changes to refined features designed to improve daily tasks like photo searches, file sharing and password management.

Siri receives complete rebuild with conversational memory and customizable voice

Apple reconstructed Siri from the ground up using Apple Intelligence architecture. The redesigned assistant can process complex requests and maintain extended conversations without losing context. Users can still activate Siri with the familiar “Hey Siri” command, but Apple added a dedicated app that preserves conversation history. This feature allows users to return to previous planning sessions or detailed answers instead of starting fresh with each interaction.

Voice customization represents another significant addition. Users can adjust Siri’s speaking pace and expressiveness to match personal preferences. During demonstrations, Apple showed Siri answering questions about local concerts, purchasing tickets, setting reminders for lottery openings and playing music from specific artists. The assistant also demonstrated screen awareness by identifying locations from images, retrieving contact addresses from Messages and creating routes with multiple stops.

Photo searches became more sophisticated in the demonstration. Siri filtered images from recent trips, narrowed results to specific family members and added selected photos to shared albums. On Mac, the assistant operates through Spotlight and context menus, comparing files, generating tables and drafting emails using information from Messages and Mail.

Google partnership powers new Apple Intelligence foundation models

Apple announced collaboration with Google on the next generation of foundation models. The company leveraged technologies from Google’s Gemini model family to develop new models for Apple Intelligence. These models run on-device and through Private Cloud Compute, maintaining Apple’s privacy-focused approach while incorporating outside AI expertise.

The partnership signals Apple’s willingness to integrate external technology to strengthen its own systems. Apple emphasized that users will continue experiencing the interface as Apple Intelligence, with Google’s contribution remaining behind the scenes. The new models deliver improved reasoning capabilities, better image understanding, enhanced speech support and more sophisticated image generation tools.

iOS 27 extends support to iPhone 11 with performance improvements

Apple confirmed iOS 27 compatibility for iPhone 11 and all models supported by iOS 26. The decision benefits users who prefer keeping existing devices rather than upgrading immediately. Major software features will reach older hardware, extending the useful life of devices released several years ago.

The company also introduced an improved CPU scheduler for devices dating back to iPhone 11. This system optimizes processing power distribution as users switch between tasks. Apple stated that older iPhones should feel more responsive during app transitions, photo searches and multitasking scenarios. Performance enhancements include:

  • App launch speeds increased up to 30% on iPhone and iPad.
  • New photos appear in libraries up to 70% faster.
  • AirDrop transfers complete up to 80% faster.
  • iPad file browsing and external drive transfers run up to five times faster.

Network transitions received attention as well. iPhones will switch more intelligently between Wi-Fi and cellular connections, addressing situations where devices cling to weak Wi-Fi signals instead of using stronger cellular networks.

Refined Liquid Glass design improves readability with adjustable transparency

Apple revisited Liquid Glass, the visual design system introduced last year. The company refined the interface to improve contrast and readability when complex content appears behind transparent elements. The goal focuses on clearer separation between controls and background content without abandoning the aesthetic entirely.

A new Settings slider gives users control over Liquid Glass transparency levels, ranging from ultra clear to fully tinted. This adjustment accommodates different preferences, allowing some users to maintain transparent aesthetics while others prefer stronger tints for improved button and text visibility. On Mac, Apple restored more structural elements. Toolbars display uniform appearance, sidebars extend to window edges, sidebar icons regain color coding and windows maintain consistent shapes. The changes balance modern design with practical readability needs.

Comprehensive parental controls introduce Child Accounts and flexible scheduling

Apple devoted substantial keynote time to child safety features and parental controls. The company emphasized Child Accounts as the foundation for age-appropriate safeguards. These accounts automatically enable adult website blocking, media limits and App Store restrictions. Parents can convert existing accounts into Child Accounts through a guided setup process that determines which apps children access immediately and which become available later.

Ask to Buy expanded to include in-app review through Messages. A new Ask to Browse feature requires children to request permission before visiting new websites in Safari. Both features activate by default for children under 13, with optional activation for teenagers. Screen Time received interface improvements and more flexible controls. Parents view clearer summaries of device usage and adjust access permissions more quickly.

Time Allowances represents a new feature offering suggested limits for app categories including Entertainment, Games and Social Media. Apple developed these recommendations with clinical and child development experts, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, basing suggestions on child age. Parents retain full control to modify limits according to family needs. Scheduling capabilities allow different app access during school hours, evenings and weekends, acknowledging that families manage screen time differently.

Safari gains tab organization and automatic password updates through Apple Intelligence

Safari incorporated Apple Intelligence features addressing common browsing challenges. The browser can now organize open tabs into topic groups. Users researching vacations, comparing products or planning projects will see related pages grouped together, with Safari automatically adding new relevant tabs to existing topics. This feature targets users who accumulate tabs because they fear losing important information.

Notify Me allows users to monitor pages for specific changes, then close tabs. Apple demonstrated use cases including camp registration openings and product restocks. When Safari detects updates, it sends notifications, potentially reducing tab clutter for users who keep pages open as reminders. The Passwords app received Apple Intelligence integration for simplified password management. While the app already warns about weak or compromised passwords, it can now update eligible accounts to stronger passwords with one tap. Passwords uses Safari to handle supported password changes automatically, eliminating manual site visits, account navigation and password creation. The feature aims to reduce friction that prevents users from addressing security vulnerabilities.

Visual Intelligence expands across devices with camera-based Siri interactions

Visual Intelligence became more prominent in Apple’s AI strategy. On iPhone, a Siri mode within the Camera app allows users to point cameras at objects, tap the shutter and receive Siri responses about what appears in frame. Apple demonstrated nutritional insights from food images and restaurant bill splitting through Apple Cash.

Mac implements Visual Intelligence through keyboard shortcuts. Users select on-screen content and ask Siri questions about it. iPad connects Visual Intelligence with screenshots, while Vision Pro enables Siri to answer questions about objects in the user’s field of view. This approach makes Apple Intelligence more contextual by connecting to immediate surroundings rather than requiring typed queries.

Apple Intelligence integration extends throughout core applications. Messages understands conversation context and offers one-tap suggestions, creating reminders or notes from message content. When contacts request photos, Messages searches libraries by recognizing keywords, locations and people. Mail generates action suggestions based on email content, working with favorite apps including third-party options. Calendar accepts natural language event creation, filling in details as users type, identifying contacts, adding locations and creating titles. The feature also adjusts recurring events based on described changes.

Phone app gains Call Context while Home improves camera summaries and notifications

The Phone app received Call Context functionality, surfacing helpful details when calling businesses. Apple demonstrated an airline call example where confirmation codes from Mail appear automatically when calls begin. The company stated the feature analyzes who users call rather than conversation content, with all processing occurring on-device.

The Home app became smarter about notifications and camera footage. It can interpret related accessory alerts as single activities, delivering one updating notification instead of multiple separate alerts. For compatible cameras, Home summarizes recorded clips, retrieves related footage and enables searching by captured content. Shortcuts became more accessible. Instead of building automations step by step, users describe desired actions. Apple showed an example where Shortcuts messages partners with estimated arrival times when leaving work. The broader message emphasizes that Apple Intelligence handles small tasks within existing apps rather than requiring separate AI tool launches.

Image creation tools expand with Spatial Reframing and photo extension features

Apple announced visual creation enhancements. Image Playground received upgraded image models capable of creating higher-quality images in multiple styles, including photorealistic options. The tool can use people from Photos libraries, create images in different dimensions and generate Messages backgrounds, contact posters and Lock Screen wallpapers. Users can refine images by describing changes, touching image sections and moving, resizing or adding details.

Photos gained dedicated AI tools. Clean Up received improvements, while Extend allows photo expansion beyond original frames. Spatial Reframing enables framing adjustments after capture, useful when photos feel almost perfect but edge composition needs refinement. These features indicate Apple’s direction toward more editable and searchable photo libraries powered by Apple Intelligence.

Regional restrictions and usage limits apply to Siri AI rollout

Siri AI will not launch simultaneously worldwide. Apple announced beta availability later this year, with developers receiving first access. Initial support covers English, with additional languages following. Siri AI will not initially reach the European Union on iOS and iPadOS. In China, Siri AI and other new Apple Intelligence features remain unavailable while Apple addresses regulatory requirements.

Some Apple Intelligence features include daily usage limits, particularly image generation and functions relying on Apple’s server-based models. Users with most iCloud+ subscription plans will receive increased access. Feature availability depends on region, language, device support and usage restrictions.
