Billy Bob Thornton, protagonist of “Landman”, associates the cast’s chemistry with the talent of creator Taylor Sheridan, praising his ability to select the ideal actors for each role. The production established itself as a great public success, leading the total television audience ratings alone during the first five weeks of 2026.

Recently, in a question and answer panel promoted by Paramount+, Thornton joined colleagues Ali Larter, Demi Moore and Sam Elliott to analyze the development of the characters and detail how Sheridan, alongside director Stephen Kay, increased the intensity of the plot to deliver an even more engaging second season.

Instant chemistry and comic relief characterize the Norris family dynamics

The new season follows Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) in his role as president of the oil company MTEX Oil, delving deeper into family dynamics and, especially, his relationship with his wife, Angela (Ali Larter). Asked about building the strong bond between the two, Thornton reported the mutual attraction felt at the first dinner with the cast: “We just started talking and instant chemistry emerged. People often ask, ‘How do you create chemistry?’ And the truth is that it cannot be created. It either exists or it doesn’t exist. And we felt it immediately.”

This tune extends to the feminine core. The good relationship between Angela and her daughter, Ainsley (Michelle Randolph), proves to be fundamental to the progress of the story, breaking the seriousness of the drama with relaxed moments. According to the cast, the first season worked as an adaptation period to find the ideal tone for this comic relief, something unusual in contemporary western series, but which now fits perfectly with Taylor Sheridan’s vision.

Sam Elliott and Demi Moore take on prominent positions in the world of oil

The family group gained significant reinforcements in the second season with the arrival of Sam Elliott in the role of TL, Tommy’s estranged father. Elliott revealed that he accepted the invitation motivated by confidence in the series creator’s work and the opportunity to work alongside Thornton:

  • The Taylor Sheridan Factor:Elliott accepted the role after working with the showrunner on “1883”, proudly joining the so-called “Taylor World”, known for its raw narratives about the universe of oil and the modern Western.
  • Mutual admiration:Thornton confirmed rumors that he cried with emotion when he discovered Elliott’s casting. The feeling was reciprocal, as Elliott declared that he had always followed and loved his colleague’s career.

While Elliott is the new addition, Demi Moore has carved out a definitive space as the central figure in the story. Her character, Cami Miller, took control of MTEX Oil after her husband’s death in the first season. Moore explained that, unlike the first year, when he already had all 10 scripts in hand, the second season was recorded without the cast knowing the final fate of the characters, making the experience more challenging and emotional.

Cast praises Stephen Kay’s direction in the face of dense themes

The new episodes also brought physical and psychological challenges to the secondary cast. Paulina Chavez, whose character Ariana Medina survived a brutal attack, highlighted the emotional toll of filming, but praised the support and respect of the entire production team.

The maturation of Cooper Norris (Jacob Lofland), Tommy’s son who tries to make his own way in the oil industry, was also central. Lofland credited much of the result to the creative freedom given by director Stephen Kay (affectionately called SK). The director was widely praised by the cast for creating a comfortable on-set environment that encourages authenticity and allows actors to test new approaches.

Mystery in the scripts opens up space for projections about the third year

The essence of “Landman” relies on Sheridan’s writing skills, which are kept completely confidential. Although the protagonist is unaware of the official direction of the story, Thornton ventured a guess about the future of the production: “My guess is that the third season will be a combination of the first, which had more tension and danger, and the second, which focused more on the eccentric family and the oil business. It will be a balanced mix of the two.”

The episodes of the second season of “Landman” are still available for streaming in the Brazilian catalog of Paramount+.
