Doubts surround Rafael Leão on the eve of his first World Cup with the Portuguese team
Striker Rafael Leão, a central figure in the Portugal national team, begins his World Cup journey with the aim of overcoming a complicated phase in his professional career. The period was marked by several controversies, both in the sporting and personal environment, culminating recently in an incident of aggression during a preparatory game. The global tournament represents a fundamental chance for the player to rediscover the high level of performance that made him stand out at Milan.
The Portugal team, part of Group K of the competition, is widely seen as one of the strong contenders for the trophy, driven by the presence of global talents in midfield, such as Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva. This squad would reach even greater potential if Rafael Leão displayed his peak performance, playing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, which is vital to diversify the Portuguese attack and avoid predictability against high-level defenses. However, the player’s current form represents a question mark for the selection.
In a recent event, the athlete was left out of the 2-1 victory against Nigeria in one of the preparation friendlies, after being sent off in the previous game against Chile. The sanction came after Leão punched Ivan Román, amid a disagreement on the field. Later, the player explained that his intention was not to hurt his opponent, but to protect his colleague João Cancelo, who was at the center of the confusion.
The player’s performance at his club has also not been satisfactory. Rafael Leão reached his peak in 2022, when he was a key player in Milan winning the Italian title. At that time, he was considered one of the great revelations of Italian football, a rising promise. Since then, however, both the team and the attacker have shown irregularities in their performances, resulting in the gradual loss of their prominent role.
The most recent season was particularly discouraging, marked by a series of injuries that compromised his constant presence on the field. He ended the period with a record of just 31 games played and 10 goals scored.
A notable incident marked this troubled period. During a 1-0 defeat to Lazio, Leão got into a clash with coach Massimiliano Allegri. When taken off the field in the second half, the player demonstrated his dissatisfaction, refusing to greet the coach, kicking the bench and needing to be calmed down by his teammates.
A few days before the start of the World Cup, the athlete himself reflected on the adverse phase in a post on Instagram. He declared: “It was a season that tested my physical and psychological state to the maximum and only those who experienced it with me up close know how difficult it was for me, so I want to thank everyone who did everything possible and impossible so that this season had a totally different direction to the one we had. May Milan be able to triumph again next season.”
Despite Milan’s desire for success, it is likely that the player’s future and that of the club will take different paths next season. Media publications in Italy and Portugal point to the striker’s departure from the Italian football scene as almost certain, with Turkey and England emerging as likely new destinations.
The athlete has also made no secret of the chance to explore new opportunities at other clubs.
In a statement to Portuguese channel RTP, he said: “I have already achieved what I wanted at Milan. In football we can never say no, you never know the future. If it has to happen, I will leave here very happy and fulfilled for having helped to take the club to where it deserves to be.”
From the 17th, the date of Portugal’s debut against the Democratic Republic of Congo, Leão will have the opportunity to fulfill his childhood dream, cultivated in the streets of the Jamaica neighborhood, on the outskirts of Lisbon: playing in a World Cup alongside his idol, Cristiano Ronaldo. Furthermore, it will be another opportunity for the striker to rediscover the joy and performance that characterized him throughout his career.
