Spanish court sentences attacker Rafa Mir to 8 and a half years for sexual assault and bodily harm
A court in the region of Valencia, in eastern Spain, ordered this Monday (15) the sentence of Spanish striker Rafa Mir to eight and a half years in prison. The sentence was imposed after the player was found guilty of sexual assault and bodily harm.
The issue of women’s rights has reached a level of great importance and sensitivity throughout Spain, especially within the sporting scene. This context intensified after several scandals involving prominent figures in national football, demonstrating a hardening of the judicial stance towards these cases, in line with a growing social demand for justice.
Among the episodes that had the greatest public repercussion, the kiss without consent that the former president of the Spanish federation, Luis Rubiales, gave to player Jenni Hermoso stands out. Another notorious case was the rape conviction of former Brazilian player Daniel Alves, who played for Barcelona, although his sentence was later overturned.
The development of the sexual assault complaint against the player
Mir was detained in September 2024 after a woman filed an accusation of sexual assault against him. At the time of the arrest, the athlete’s lawyer declared that the sexual act had been consensual and that his client vehemently rejected all the accusations presented.
According to the verdict issued, Rafa Mir and another footballer met two young women in a nightclub in Valencia. Later, the group went to the attacker’s residence to continue the celebration. There, according to the court’s conclusion, Mir carried out the sexual assault against one of the women, first in the swimming pool and then in one of the bathrooms of the house.
The decision handed down by the judiciary made a point of highlighting the coherence and reliability of the testimony given by the victim. This narrative was validated by testimonies from other people present and also by detailed expert reports, which reinforced the accusation.
The woman who suffered the attack should receive compensation worth 64 thousand euros, which is equivalent to approximately R$376 thousand at the current exchange rate. The court also clarified that the sentence handed down is not final and there is a possibility that it will be appealed by the player’s defense.
Currently, Rafa Mir wears the shirt of Elche, a team that competes in LaLiga, the main division of Spanish football. At the time the incident occurred, in 2024, the attacker had a contract with Valencia, a club that has already won the Spanish championship six times.
The 28-year-old player has also played for other important teams, such as Wolverhampton and Sevilla. Furthermore, Rafa Mir represented the Spanish men’s team at the Tokyo Olympic Games, held in 2020.
The Elche club did not immediately respond after being contacted to comment on the conviction of its athlete.
