Real Madrid announces arrival of Bernardo Silva free of charge after decisive intervention from Mourinho
Real Madrid made the acquisition of Bernardo Silva official this Wednesday, in a strategic move that did not involve transfer costs. The 31-year-old Portuguese midfielder left Manchester City to sign a two-year contract with the team from the Spanish capital, valid until 2028.
Silva’s arrival marks the Whites club’s second major signing announced during the World Cup, following the acquisition of 27-year-old Spanish defender Marc Cucurella, who cost Chelsea 60 million euros. The Portuguese star, in turn, is expected to debut with the Portugal team this Wednesday, at 7pm, in a clash against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
With the Portugal national team, Bernardo Silva, at 31 years old, will face teams from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia in the group stage of the World Cup, in Group K.
The challenges for the Portuguese midfielder in Group K of the World Cup include clashes against the teams of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia, representing Portugal.
After nine seasons playing for Manchester City, where he arrived in 2017 from Monaco for 50 million euros, the talented midfielder says goodbye to England. Under the guidance of Pep Guardiola, 55 years old, Silva has consolidated himself as one of the main creators of global plays, collecting six trophies from the English Championship, three FA Cups and the 2023 Champions League. In his new home, in Madrid, he will meet his fellow countryman José Mourinho, 63 years old, who has just started his second stage as coach of Real Madrid.
Intense competition from rivals for Portuguese Bernardo Silva
For a considerable period, Silva’s name was linked to Real Madrid’s historic rivals, such as Atlético de Madrid and Barcelona. Two weeks before the announcement, Jorge Mendes, the 60-year-old’s agent, had told renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano that Bernardo’s decision would only come after the end of the World Cup.
However, the negotiation scenario changed drastically with the intervention of Real Madrid. According to information published by the Spanish press, coach José Mourinho was a key player in speeding up the transfer in favor of his new team. The experienced Portuguese coach reportedly emphasized to Silva’s representatives that the talented left-footed player was an absolute priority in his plans, an approach that, by all indications, was decisive in the positive outcome.
