The Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train, known for its punctuality and safety, faced a complete stoppage this Friday after a collision. The “Nozomi 49” train collided with a person, resulting in the train being immobilized on the tracks and the service being completely interrupted.
Information released by JR Central details that the accident occurred at around 5:40 pm (local time) this Friday, the 19th. The “Nozomi 49”, which runs along the Tokaido line, hit a person who improperly accessed the track area while passing through Hamamatsu station. Events of this nature are extremely uncommon on the Shinkansen network, which has strict security protocols and infrastructure to prevent intrusions, making the outage a notable development for the Japanese system.
As a direct result of the incident, all operations on the Tokaido Shinkansen line were completely suspended. The global service outage officially began at 7 p.m.
To date, the concessionaire responsible for transportation has not released an estimated time for the resumption of travel. The lack of forecast keeps thousands of passengers waiting for information and looking for alternatives.
