The confrontation between João Fonseca and his German partner Daniel Altmaier against the Italian tennis player Flavio Cobolli and the American athlete Ben Shelton, valid for the semifinals of the doubles bracket of the ATP 500 in Halle, ended up postponed until this Saturday. The event management in Germany has not yet established the official time at which the game will be held.
What happened
The match was originally scheduled to take place from 11 am (Brasília time) this Friday, being positioned right after Altmaier and Shelton’s individual games in the tournament. The postponement ended up being motivated by the exhaustion of the tennis player from Germany, who had to enter the court shortly before to face Daniil Medvedev — in a three-set marathon in which the Brazilian’s partner emerged victorious.
While the European competitor managed to get a place in the singles semi-final of the preparatory tournament on grass, the young man from Rio ended up being eliminated early in the individual group in his debut match. Fellow German Yannick Hanfmann overcame the tennis player from Brazil, who had been focused on maintaining his high level after reaching the quarterfinals at Roland Garros.
The South American athlete’s good campaign in the German competition is therefore concentrated in the men’s doubles tournament. The partnership with Altmaier advances in Halle after they came on as last-minute substitutes (lucky losers), occupying the space left in the main draw by the withdrawal of Australian Nick Kyrgios due to physical problems.
The tennis player from the United States, in turn, also had a commitment in the quarterfinals of the individual bracket during this Friday’s round. In a North American duel, Shelton was defeated by Taylor Fritz by 2 sets to 1 and ended up saying goodbye to the tournament’s singles contest.
