Vasco announces Renato Gaúcho’s departure from the club’s technical command after mutual agreement with the coach
Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama officially announced this Thursday (18) the dismissal of coach Renato Gaúcho from his duties. The information, published on the Rio team portal, indicated that the decision resulted from a consensus between both parties involved.
There was already a noticeable exhaustion of the commander leading the team, which even preceded the period of stoppage for the World Cup. After a 3-1 defeat against RB Bragantino, playing in São Januário, the coach was the target of insults and objects thrown by the fans. After the confrontation, he chose not to participate in the usual post-game interview, being replaced by football director Admar Lopes and midfielder Thiago Mendes.
After the incident, Renato Gaúcho expressed his regret, stating that “it was a regrettable night. Nothing went as planned and unfortunately we lost a home game that could have put us in a better position in the table”. He also highlighted the need to “continue working and focus on Wednesday’s qualification for the South American Championship”, before “thinking about Sunday’s game, at home, for the Brazilian Championship”.

The coach took charge of Gigante da Colina on March 12, making his first appearance in the fifth round of the Brazilian Championship, facing Palmeiras. Throughout his tenure, he played a total of 22 matches, covering the Brasileirão, the Copa Sudamericana and the Copa do Brasil, with a balance of nine wins, six draws and seven defeats, resulting in a 50% success rate.
The team’s trajectory in the Brazilian Championship appears to be quite challenging, with the team occupying 17th position. Currently, Vasco has accumulated just 20 points in 18 matches, appearing in the delicate relegation zone, with only five victories achieved. Instability in technical command is a common reality in clubs fighting against relegation, highlighting the incessant search for a turnaround in results.
Regarding the next challenges, Vasco is scheduled for the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana against Independiente Medellín, on July 22nd, at 7pm, right after the end of the World Cup. For the Copa do Brasil, the Rio club will face Fluminense, also in the round of 16, with the first legs scheduled for the 1st and 2nd of August and the return matches for the 5th and 6th of August.
