Dramatic recovery guarantees a place in the semis for the leader of the ranking

Tennis player Aryna Sabalenka, current number one in the world, staged an impressive comeback this Friday (19) to secure her place in the semifinals of the WTA 500 in Berlin. In a match that required a lot of resilience, the Belarusian overcame the Czech Nikola Bartůňková, 62nd in the rankings, after almost two and a half hours of confrontation on a day of intense heat in the German capital. The 2/6, 7/6 (7-2) 6/4 victory was a testament to his persistence on the court.

The beginning of the confrontation was marked by surprise. Bartůňková dominated the first set with a score of 6/2 and maintained the overwhelming pace in the second, opening up a 4-0 lead. The young Czech, just 20 years old, seemed to be on her way to one of the biggest victories of her career, putting Sabalenka under intense pressure and surprising the spectators.

Overcoming heat and pressure at crucial moments

During the first 57 minutes of the match, Sabalenka faced significant difficulties. The strong heat in Berlin and the opponent’s precision contributed to the disadvantage of the Belarusian, who was unable to find her usual rhythm.

The turning point came in the second set. Bartůňková’s inexperience in closing big matches began to take its toll, while Sabalenka seized the opportunity, demonstrating her renowned mental strength. She reeled off five consecutive games to reverse 0-4 to 5-4 and then closed the set in a tie-break 7-2, reigniting her chances in the tournament.

The decisive battle enshrines the resilience of number one

The third set maintained the tension. Bartůňková fought bravely and took a 4-3 lead, but Sabalenka’s determination prevailed in the crucial moments. The world number one raised her level of play and managed the final games to seal the victory at 6/4. The triumph, which lasted exactly two hours and 23 minutes, was a test not only of physical fitness, but of unwavering mental strength, an essential characteristic for top athletes.

This victory, which demanded so much from the top seed, highlights the importance of the ability to fight and adapt in adverse moments. For a tennis player at the top of the rankings, overcoming such a difficult start against a lower-ranked opponent, especially in a WTA 500 tournament, serves as a crucial warm-up for the grass circuit and Wimbledon, showing the robustness of her game and the mind of a champion.

Sabalenka will face the 2024 champion in the semi-finals

In the next phase, Aryna Sabalenka will have an even greater challenge: the American Jessica Pegula, number four in the world and, significantly, the champion of the 2024 edition of the WTA 500 in Berlin. Pegula secured her place after an equally disputed match against her compatriot Madison Keys, winning in two tight sets, both decided in a tie-break, with scores of 7/6 (7-5) and 7/6 (10-8).

The clash between Sabalenka and Pegula is eagerly awaited. The Belarusian, after the exhausting battle in the quarterfinals, will face an opponent who has already proven her excellence on the grass courts in Berlin. Pegula’s experience as a title defender adds a strategic element to the clash, turning this semi-final into a real acid test for Sabalenka’s ambition to win the trophy.

Other matches define the tournament semi-finals

The other semi-final bracket was also defined with exciting games. Czech Linda Nosková, 13th in the rankings, defeated Spain’s Paula Badosa, former number two in the world (currently 142nd), with scores of 6/1 and 6/3.

Then, the Filipina Alexandra Eala, who occupies 35th position in the ranking, surprised by eliminating the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, eighth best tennis player on the planet. Eala advanced with a victory in two straight sets, with scores of 6/3 and 6/4. The results promise a final phase of the WTA 500 in Berlin full of unpredictable matches and a high technical level.
