Does Kylian Mbappé play today? France vs Iraq at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Kylian Mbappé arrives as France’s main weapon this Monday (22) against Iraq, in the second round of Group I of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The star, who has already found the net twice in his debut against Senegal, is looking for another decisive performance at the Lincoln Financial Field, in Philadelphia, from 6pm (Brasília time).

After the 3-1 victory in the opening, France, third in the FIFA rankings, has Mbappé as a highlight. The striker has already scored 58 goals for the national team and 14 in World Cups, approaching historic records. Didier Deschamps should use him again as a reference in attack, with freedom to drop down the sides and explore the Iraqi defense.

Iraq, who lost in their debut, adopted a defensive posture to contain the French momentum. Even with clear favoritism, Mbappé and his teammates know that the game requires concentration to avoid surprises. A victory puts France very close to the round of 16.

Mbappé and the keys to the French attack

Mbappé should lead Deschamps’ 4-2-3-1. Mike Maignan continues in goal, with Jules Koundé, William Saliba, Dayot Upamecano and Lucas Digne in defense. In the middle, Adrien Rabiot and Manu Koné provide support. In attack, Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembélé (or Bradley Barcola) and Mbappé form a fast and creative trio.

For Iraq, the 4-4-2 with Jalal Hassan in goal, Hussein Ali, Zaid Tahseen, Akam Hashem and Merchas Doski on the baseline tries to neutralize Mbappé’s attacks. Aymen Hussein and Ali Al-Hamadi are the options on the counterattack, but the challenge is immense against the French speed.

Mbappé’s impact in Group I

With Norway and France tied at 3 points after the first round, Mbappé could be the difference for France to take the lead alone. The number 10 already showed in his debut that he is in great shape and can decide the game early, paving the way for rotating the squad in future commitments.

This is the first duel between France and Iraq in World Cups. Mbappé’s record in major tournaments reinforces Gallic favoritism, but the striker often warns of the danger of underestimating motivated rivals.
